One of the biggest problems that most dog owners face, other than house breaking is prevent a dog chewing. Did you know that most any dog can find things to chew in a empty room?

Our first cocker spaniel chewed the front piece of wood on
our love seat, the fabric on the arm and back of our armchair and the arm of our love seat. I didn’t realize how much a young dog could chew, but over time, it really adds up.

Dog chewing is a normal pattern for dogs, since they associate eating with pleasure. One of the big reasons dogs chew is to relax. If you want your dog to be stress free, you want your pet to relax, but not at the expense of your living room, and house.

Dogs who chew have a destructive habit that needs to be controlled and changed.

Your dog may chew because he is teething, and just like with a baby it hurts (a lot). So give him something cold to ease the pain, like frozen rawhide bones. This is a very good way to begin breaking this habit. Just keep a few frozen rawhide bones in the
freezer.

Because a dogs have a short attention span, you can take advantage of this by getting 10 or 12 rawhides chews to freeze. The trick is to put five bones down, where your dog can find them. He will go from one rawhide to another, and chew on them.

Then in a few days, put them back into the freezer and set out another five.

Each rawhide will smell a little different and this gives him a variety of things to chew on without endangering your furniture or shoes!

Also provide your dog with lots of toys. You can never have too many of them and he will get a lot of comfort from them, even when you are not around.

Sometimes, even the best dogs can act out, and if you’re working with dog behavioral problems, it is best to act as quickly if feasible. If naughty behavior is permitted to continue, you may finish up with a larger problem on your hands. The good reports is, there are plenty of straightforward ways you can handle dog behavior issues in a humane and friendly way.

Dog behavioral problems can range between lovable, but annoying little issues, to full fledged deadly issues like biting. While there are several reasons behind behavioral problems, the solutions are fairly simple. You can overcome your dog’s issues with consistent; no dog is ever too ancient to learn. Let us take a look at some easy and simple to carry out dog training tips.

One. Consistency is The Key. This is the comprehensive key when coaching any animal. Your work will only be constrained if you let them off the hook once in a while. You’re dog will start to grasp that you’re the boss man so long as you’re both consistent with both corrections and praise.

2. It’s Vital to Use Positive Reinforcement. Although choke chains and other older dog coaching tools could be effective at first, these only cause more problems in the future. Positive reinforcement helps your dog associate good behaviour with good rewards is a particularly effective method of tackling even the hardest dog behaviour issues.

Positive reinforcement means a dog gets rewarded by doing the honest thing, while they get nothing when they do not. When applied solidly, even the most recalcitrant dog will make a response to these methods.

Three. Introduce a Crate. One of the best paths to put an end to destructive behaviour is to provide your dog with clear cut limits. An efficient and humane coaching aid is the crate, and you can do this while you’re out or if you need some space. You could need to introduce them to the crate slowly, and allow them time to get used to being confined. Remember, reward them for good behavior while in their crate and, as always, be consistent. A crate should not be used as a punishment device, but rather as a secure place for them to go and relax.

Four. Here’s a further top for you and the members of your house. It is important that everyone concerned with the dog use the same systems once the training to fix dog behavioral problems are started. The dog should be handled constantly by everybody. If not your poor dog will become awfully confused and make act out even more than before the corrective coaching was initatied.

Once you have these strategies in place, you can simply begin to solve your dog’s behavioral issues without unjustified stress to you or your pet. You’ll definitely appreciate the absence of harmful and destructive dog behavioral problems when you have a more well-behaved pet.

Today’s tame dogs have a lot of wild traits that go far back in their bloodlines. After all, their ancestors had to be aggressive to survive, to search for food and shelter, and to mate. A lot of selective breeding has taken place over the centuries which has stopped a lot of the aggression in dogs; however, the ability to attack and cause harm is just as real now as it was back then. It’s a dog’s nature to be aggressive, and nothing humans have been able to do has completely restrained this trait. Therefore, it’s up to us as doting dog owners to learn to help our aggressive dogs handle a trait that is a natural part of them.

As humans we have a lot of control over the aggression in our animals. Even if your dog does begin exhibiting some aggression, you can take steps to comprehend what’s going on and get control of it without much problem. With dogs, there are several types of aggression. Two of the most commonly found types are dog aggression shown to strangers and that shown to those living in your household. What difference does it make who the dog’s aggression is being aimed at? Why would we need to waste time defining two types of aggression? Essentially, it’s because although both of these types are aggression, they take place for different reasons and need to be treated differently.

Obviously, aggression around strangers is easy to see. You know your dog well, so you’ll know when he gets excessively agitated by watching him pace constantly, bark, whine, and notice the smallest of sounds. Or, alternately, if he becomes very quiet, sitting in one place without taking his eyes off the stranger, be it the postal carrier, a friend, or someone walking down the street. Some dogs just don’t adapt quickly to people they don’t know. They prefer to be in the company of people they know and who they feel safe with. Usually this happens because they haven’t been been introduced to a lot of social situations so that they can get used to the thought of strangers. If you keep your dog confined at home all of the time, how is he ever going to get used to the idea of strangers and unfamiliar situations?

You can help your dog become more socialized by helping him get accustomed to being around both strange animals and people. You may have never considered it before, but this is a major need for you to think about when training your dog. Beginning at a very young age, immediately after he’s had all of his vaccinations, he should be exposed to a big variety of different people, environments, animals, and experiences. By doing this, you’re showing your dog early on that meeting new people and trying new experiences is both safe and enjoyable. You want to be sure hand slowly introduce him to a variety of people: the toddler next door, a skater wearing safety equipment, senior citizens, both men and women, a person carrying an umbrella, teens, and a variety of others. He will learn to be at ease around strangers, and they won’t seem to be a threat to his world any longer. Waiting until he’s fully grown and then trying to ease his fears by patting him and telling him it’s fine just isn’t going to validate it.

How can you go about socializing your puppy so that he will not grow up with an aversion to strangers? For starters, you can take him to a puppy preschool. This consists of going to puppy classes, such as those taking place at veterinary clinics. A group of around ten dog owners and their puppies will gather with at least one qualified trainer who will start showing the puppies the important obedience commands, such as sit and stay. You’ll like the fact that your puppy is learning to mind, but there’s an even more important benefit to attending these classes. Not only will your puppy develop joyful thoughts about visiting the vet’s office, but he’ll also experience play sessions during the classes during which he’ll be allowed to be off-leash and frolic with the other puppies.

Talk about developing great social skills right from the beginning! He’ll be able to learn how to get along with a cross section of strange dogs while being introduced to a group of people he is unfamiliar with. Since a trainer will always be there, the environment will remain safe, secure, and in control. Don’t think that puppy preschool is the lifelong answer to aggressive traits, however. Socialization is a never ending process that you will need to work on all of your dog’s life. No matter what his age, he will always benefit from being introduced to new places and being around new people. The key is never to allow him to be exposed to more than he can deal with. Start slowly, with or without puppy preschool, and slowly increase the stimulus he’s exposed to.

There are two basic reasons that dogs demonstrate aggression towards family members. One is that he’s defending something that he perceives to be his. This may be a toy, his bed, his food dish, or something else he has come to feel belongs to him. It doesn’t appear to be a major problem, does it, because you realize you aren’t opting to take away his belongings, but there are more underlying problems that you need to know about. The reason that he’s behaving so possessively about his things is because he’s not comfortable with the way you and other family members are treating or handling him.

At this point, your dog is exhibiting a trait that is not unusual amongst dogs and which is regarded as resource guarding. This situation may include being overly-protective of his things, snarling at you if you come around him while he’s eating, and giving you cold, hard glares if you start to take a toy away from him. Dogs are a great deal like people in that they all feel possessive at times, even if what they’re being possessive of doesn’t seem too vital to anyone else. You may observe your dog acting possessively about a hunk of garbage, wadded up newspapers, worn out socks, and other trash items. Other times you can understand his possessiveness better when it’s over food or toys.

Why would a dog that has seemed happy and at ease suddenly get all tense over the ownership of a possession? In order to find an answer for this question, we once again need to look at the origins of dog behavior. Originally, dogs were part of a pack which is a very controlled community. Within this community, each animal has its own rank to fit into the power structure as compared to every other animal in the pack. Each dog comprehends exactly where he and each other dog fits into the line of authority, and, therefore, knows whether he should stay out of or become the aggressor in any given situation.

To your dog, your family unit is similar to a dog pack. He has made his own decisions about the hierarchy of power within the family and ranked each member. He also perceives his own place in the rankings. Due to these intrinsic behaviors, being with your dog can get interesting. If he sees himself as more of an authority figure than other members of the family, he’s going to become very self-satisfied. He’s going to act like a smart alack and begin treating everyone with more aggression. When he has decided that he is the superior animal in the pack, he’s going to act based on that perception. He understands that none of the others in the pack have a right to aggression or to try to boss him as the one highest in rank. As long as he feels that no one in the family is superior to him, he feels he has a right to his aggression, and he’ll never imagine that anyone will aggressively pursue whatever he wants to have.

So how should you react when your dog starts exhibiting aggressive traits that show he considers himself the most authoritative dog of the pack? The answer is that you must firmly work on his obedience training, and do it often. These sessions will help him to understand that you, in fact, are the authority figure of the pack. Give him two 15-minute lessons a day, and he’ll soon learn that you’re the boss and that he has to do what you expect him to do. During these sessions, when he behaves appropriately you should heap on the praise and treats to reinforce the behavior you’re after. If he doesn’t behave as he should, put him in “time out” by shutting him outside or in another room.

It always helps to be informed aboutany subject you’re involved with, so take a small amount of time to get some of the basics about dog psychology and ways to communicate with your dog. When you start havingsessions with your pooch, keep them short and to the point. As you probably already know, most dogs aren’t going to allow you to be huggy-kissy with them. In their world, allowing you to cuddle them and put your arms around them means that they are admitting that you are the boss. If your dog lets you to cuddle him, you know you’ve been relegated to the stature of the superior dog in the pack. If a dog wasn’t subjected to a lot of physical contact at an early age, he isn’t going to feel at ease with it as an adult. If anyone tries to hug him, he’s going to become tense and show dog aggression. If your dog’s aggressive behavior is out of hand and you don’t feel you have the ability to do the training yourself, you need to contemplate employing a dog trainer to accomplish the task for you.

Another reason that dogs become aggressive when being handled is that they’ve had at least one grooming session gone wrong. Two of the most common bad experiences dog have had with grooming are bathing and nail-clipping. Many dogs panic when faced with being held and bathed. Pet owners have trouble coping when their perfect pet suddenly gets all excited and upset in the middle of a bath. They often think they need more restraints which only makes the problem worse. More restraint will mean more frenzy, and the dog will once again conclude that having a bath is not a good experience to be avoided if at all possible. He may even believe he must protect himself by baring his teeth and growling at his owner. Nail clipping can be even more upsetting to a dog. When clipping his nails, it’s easy to clip too far and cut the blood vessel that runs through the claw. When this takes place, it means a lot of pain for the dog and makes him even more leery of those nail clippers.

If your dog is one of these animals that becomes frightened during grooming sessions, you could be wondering if he can be altered in order to make the sessions less uncomfortable for everyone involved. Although it’s much less difficult to begin when your dog is a little puppy, it can be done. If you’re beginning with a puppy, make sure you afford him a lot of touching and rubbing all over his body so that he’ll become an adult who will enjoy being handled. Older dogs that were not given this type of touching as puppies have a tougher time adapting to being touched. With your older dog’s dislike of clippers, start by taking hold of one of his paws and touching gently with the clippers. Demonstrate for him that clippers don’t necessarily mean pain. Since he’s undoubtedly already had some less than positive grooming experiences, you must teach him to stay calm because there’s nothing that’s going to hurt him.

For the older dog that doesn’t like bathing, you need to practice the bathing process with him making it a happy experience for him. Sit him in the warm bathtub if you can. If you must take him outdoors, don’t do it when it’s too cool for a comfortable bath. He won’t learn to enjoy a bath by being sprayed with icy-cold water. While you’re giving him the water bath, give him lots of praise, hugs, and even occasional treats to help him understand that you’re pleased with his behavior. A major factor in these practice sessions is to give your dog his freedom if he becomes uncomfortable and stressed out. Keep the complete process fun and enjoyable for your dog. Don’t push him too far or too quickly, and if he gets agitated, stop what you’re doing as soon as possible.

There’s a reason that dogs show aggression. They’re giving you a warning that you must stop what you’re doing or face the consequences. If you try practicing the grooming techniques outlined above and your dog still can’t stand being groomed, it’s time to hire a professional. Your vet will be happy to clip his nails. Make sure you let the vet know that your pooch might be an aggressive dog during clipping times so that your vet will safeguard himself for the possibility of aggressive behavior. Dog grooming services abound where for a price you can have trained professional groomers wash, brush, and clip your dog for you. Once again, let them know up front about your dog’s aversion to grooming.

Many people want the best for their animals, trying to get them to go to canine obedience, dog daycare, and pet stylists but it is good to teach them yourself so they will obey you. The best way to teach your animal is to sign up for training lessons with a professional, and these will not be too expensive and will a great way for someone to teach you how to teach your animal which will be important because they will not always be there to tell you what to do or be there to make your animal listen to you so you will want to take notes or memorize what they tell you to do so that you can use that information for yourself when you are at home. But many there are some simple tricks for those without time for all of that.

The best way to make sure that your animal listens to you when you call it is to make sure that it thinks that it will get a treat or some other type of positive reinforcement when it does come. Once the animal comes to you, you will want to give it a small treat and praise it by saying “good boy” so that it can correlate the positive attention and the treat to coming when it is called, and then you will start to alternate having treats and not having treats, and then try many with no treats at all, to see whether they will obey and will come if the voice pith and tone are right and still give them the positive reinforcement, and you will want this to occur over several days and even weeks repeating this process or just stretching it out over the length of that period so that it takes effect slowly so the animal will be conditioned to listen to you when you call them, and will not just forget what it is supposed to do because you did not spend enough time teaching them what they are supposed to do when they hear you make a certain sound, and always remember that positive and negative reinforcement are good, but hitting your animal will never teach them constructively it will only hurt them. Making sure your pet is properly trained will help keep them cherished in your family. If they do not know that they are doing something wrong and they will be punished for it, how will they ever stop doing it? Proper training is crucial to having a great pet. Hitting your dog to make it stop doing something is the wrong decision. Animal abuse should not be taken lightly. Animal abuse will not help them become a better pet.

There are several kinds of dogs that I thought would be neat to own. Each has a mystique of its own. One is a Rhodesian ridgeback. They are good companions for children, known to be good watchdogs, and were, once upon a time, lion hunters in Africa. My only problem with Rhodesian ridgebacks is that they require plenty of exercise and more room to run than I can provide. Mastiffs are huge dogs which can weigh as much as 150 pounds, and I thought it would be fun to own one.

They be worn as war dogs, and they as well have served as watchdogs on English manors. The Saint Bernard is a type of mastiff which has a long tradition of helping human beings who lost their way or got injured in Alps. The bullmastiff is a good alternative to the mastiff since it can live in small homes and does not eat as much food. Bull Mastiffs are excellent watchdogs and have a reputation for gentleness. So you say you have a dog? Well the north mastiff is sure to outsize most dogs in America.

It is beautiful, strong, powerful, and very loving. Unlike most large dogs, this breed has a relatively dry mouth, and although weighing at times up to two hundred pounds, is not aggressive. If you are interested in a dog this large, training is a must. To avoid future troubles, the trainer must make it clear that he is the leader of the pack. Most breeds of this size tend to have health problems. The American Mastiff is generally free of these diseases. Worried about how much exercise this dog will need? Surprisingly the American Mastiff does fine in apartment if they get their walk in daily.

Overall the breed tends to be lazy, so getting them outside is a must. Afraid of hair care? This short-haired dog is easily groomed with occasional bathing and brushing when necessary. Dog training is not a new concept and if you want a large breed dog, you’ve come to the right place. They used to be scary wolves living in the forest and people avoided them, but now they live in our homes as faithful pets. Live creative!

We chose what we wanted them to do and how we wanted them to look, and just as a well-trained dog fetches the master’s slippers, the breeds of dogs conformed to our plans for them. Collies herd our sheep, terriers catch rats, Labradors retrieve ducks and english mastiffs protect whoever they are commanded to protect. The dog’s fierce appearance alone strikes terror into the heart of a would-be attacker, yet its loving and gentle nature with its own human family makes it the ideal protector. The wolf is no longer at the door; he sleeps alongside the baby in the nursery.

Nowadays, kennels for dogs have changed in many functions and connotations. The pet owners commonly make these kennels for dogs in structures that can be lived in by one dog or even several dogs.

Doghouses

Doghouse is naturally a kennel for a dog where the animal is protected. For most families who control the dogs as their pet, commonly put the dog kennel outside the home accompanied by attached leash, near the food and water source.

Any other meaning of a kennel may be a dog transporting crate in which the dog is put during transport or a dog run where the dog is let loose. Kennels for dogs that are applied as a transporting crate commonly have standard measurements to suit transportation modes. Dog runs are small enclosures that let the dog to run for a short distance. Some kennels for dogs that are made as runs are extended to offer more space for running.

Breeding Kennels

The establishments that particularize in propagating specific breed are breeding kennels. These breeding kennels for dogs can be very large operations or just at home businesses. Commonly, these breeding kennels for canines have stud services just like services to help in the birthing of puppies. There are also other services available in breeding kennels. These varieties of breeding kennels for dogs are focusing on purebred dogs that have bloodlines that are registered with a kennel club or a dog club in the area or country.

In reality, not every breeding kennels are recognized or approved by national clubs and the government. Some kennels are puppy mills where there is indiscriminate propagation of just one female dog. And then the government and other knew kennel clubs discourages these types of kennels because the quality of the dogs is questionable. Furthermore, the treatment for the parents and puppies is inhumane and unhealthy.

Boarding Kennels

In reality boarding kennels for dogs are the establishments of dog house from time to time. These boarding kennels are some places where pet owners leave their dogs while they are out of town. These kennels can be a selection to dog sitters and owners pay a fee to have their pets housed here.

At the moment, the uses and functions of the kennels for dogs have developed and changed. But principally, the major concept of kennels for dogs is just the same, to control dogs.

Serving your dogs a dog kennel is just like serving your child a room. It can be said that you offer a private area for your dog to play or sleep the toys without bothering you. This can also prove that you’re taking care of your dogs well. So, you can offer your dogs a commercial dog kennel or even an own-made dog kennel.

Commercial Dog Kennels?

For those who do not have sufficient time or lack skill in building a dog kennel, commercial dog kennels are great options. These varieties of kennels are ready to use and only need little care. But these commercial kennels, however, have also disadvantages. Firstly, they make you pay more than you need to make the dog kennel yourself at home.

Secondly, this commercial kennel comes with a programmed size and any other features that may not need the specific needs of your dog. To adjust them, it will need more money. For many dog owners, especially for those who travel more often or frequently have to modify houses, commercially portable dog kennels are a great option.

These kennels are smaller and relatively cheap that is collapsible and also easy to carry along. But keep in mind that these kennels are not very great for strong or aggressive dogs.

Homemade Dog Kennels

You can choose to build a kennel for dog yourself if you have sufficient time and basic building skills or if you want to cut some of the cost of a commercial kennel. Many people say that building a dog kennel at home is also an enjoyable activity, including kids. While building your own dog kennel, it is important to first consider the zoning and building codes of your locality so to prevent inadvertently transgressing any rules regarding the size of the kennel on your property. Next, pick the construction material for the kennel carefully.

Actually, steel wires for flooring have less chance of hosting infectious microbes or getting splintered (as do wood and plastic) and concrete is understood for it strength and facile cleaning, though it may increase cracks and host insects and parasites. Heavy duty fencing material serve extra security against possible threats to the dog in case of any accidents and also avoids the dog from digging all around the place.

Experts state that it is great idea if you make your own dog kennel on high ground to minimize the damaging due to the snow and rain. Always offer a bit shaded area in the front part of the kennel. Make this with a lightweight material.

Does that answer your question? For further explanation about dog kennel you can find the complete guide here!

Does your dog still have difficult issues like barking at complete strangers, jumping, or or going to the bathroom in the house? Well, maybe it is time for you to try a new approach with a new type of punishment or consequence. Dogs only learn from their mistakes if they are told no during the problem they are having. Trainers who specialize in dog obedience training can help you and your dog, learn how to accomplish the task. dog sitting is also very important at this stage because everyone in the home needs to agree on the training, to get the proper results. pet care is a very special job, but it can be very hard, so use your resources!

Dog obedience training involves your dog, a specialized trainer, and a lot of useful resources that you may not have available to you. Dog training is a difficult job but if it is repeated and practiced in and out of home, wonderful results can come out of it. Finally your dog may bay be able to stop jumping on the couch, or maybe he will now stop chewing every valuable thing you own. Training your dog may be the best thing that you can do and what you can do for your whole family.

When you leave the home, just like a child, dogs think that the rules are somehow lifted from the premises and they no longer apply to them. A helpful tool for that would be to hire a dog sitter, one who really knows you and your dog and one who can control your dog even in the worst situations. Your dog sitter should be able to get your dog to obey and follow direction just as well as you can, just to make all of your lives so much more fun.

Pet care is an extremely difficult enterprise and it can take up a lot of time during your day as well as a lot of difficult training on your behalf. Dogs are a lot like children, so handling a new puppy and all of its baggage can be a rough if you aren’t properly prepared. Again, just like children they will destroy things, make messes tear up the house, and ultimately enrage you but ultimately in the end, they are an extremely happy little creature to have in your home. Puppies, although they are fun to play with, they require as much work as a child. This means that it is necessary for you to bath them and take them out and feed them and play with them constantly.

Owning awell mannered pet is a rewarding asset to show off toeveryone who sees, because a dog that listens to its master is not only a smart dog but one that can learn to do more and more each day. Puppies and grown dogs are a lot of fun, but they are also a lot of work, so if you do not think that you can handle all of the strenuous work yourself, then you may want to look into a dog trainer or a sitter or someone who can just play with your dog and take care of them the way that you would take care of them.

If you’re like most people, while growing up, your pets were a combination of your best friend and wild beast. Now that you’re a little older and are looking to get your own kids their first pet you want to make sure you have a more civilized creature. The couch getting chewed up isn’t quite as funny anymore, now that you know how much it cost. To help protect both your sanity and your home you should look into a good dog training course. There are all kinds of courses availabe, but how do you know you will get your money’s worth?

Some people, especially older relatives will tell you not to waste your time and money. That a firm voice is all that is necessary. For some rare animals, that may be true, but most will benefit from training. A trained dog is much less likely to bite a rambunctious child than an untrained one. You can also have a much happier relationship with your dog, if you are confident that they will not run away, or attack other animals at the dog park.

Why is the course material going to work for you? You should think about how you like to learn. Do you want to be guided gently, or allowed to explore topics at your own pace? Or do you prefer step-by-step? Do you pick up on ideas more easily when you have read them or seen them demonstrated?

Now that you know your training preferences, the dog breeder where you got your dog from could be one of your first stops. Most established breeders got that way by entering their dogs into shows to proof the pedigree. So this is going to be a person who knows what they are talking about. Build a rapport and you may even learn some of their personal secrets.

Your local humane society is a trove of hidden knowledge. The staff here does not work with prized animals. They have gained experience in the trenches dealing with the worst of the worst. Utilize their expertise to turn your beast into a bundle of fun. Many animal shelters also offer obedience training at a lower-than-average cost.

You can visit dog parks, or other locales that dog owners and their charges frequent. Watch for well-behaved dogs and approach the owner. Ask how they went about training their dogs. The answers you receive this way may be quite different from the breeder’s and that will help you to tailor your experience to you and your dog.

A last option that often appeals when including the whole family is a priority is home dog training course with your dog. Many famous animal trainers have started to sell video sets and books that teach the novice how to train their dog. Just make sure that you fully read the reviews before purchasing and that you fully study the source material prior to starting the course.

by Danah Reed

There is no doubt about the importance of training your dog well, especially if you are looking for a long lasting and healthy relationship with the pet living in your house. This means that the basic rules must be lived by and training your dog to do certain things is important. More important however is the way you go about training your dog.

A dog is incredibly sensitive and learns quickly who the boss is in your home. If a dog is trained with harsh words, yelling and hitting then he will learn to fear you instead of love you. You want to establish a bond with your dog, so that your dog will trust you as a loving caregiver. If the dog expects you to react with anger and physical punishment then you cannot expect to have a loving relationship with a dog who wants to be your companion.

And the most incredible thing is, when it comes to training your dog, that your dog will be trained faster and easier if you use positive reinforcement as apposed to negative reinforcement. Your dog wants to please you and win your affection, and as soon as he figures out what pleases you then he will work very hard to do those tasks.

Positive reinforcement means that you will take extra care to praise your dog for actions you require of him and not focusing on those slip up and mistakes he makes.

A good example is your dog having an “accident” around the house. Instead of yelling at him for being a bad boy, just dont give it any attention at all. Not getting any attention from you at all is already a punishment in itself since your dog will always try to get your approval.

But when you see your dog go to the bathroom where hes supposed to, then shower him with love and affection. He will soon learn that doing his business outside pleases you and he will go out of his way to make it outside whenever possible.

Always ensure you are setting your dog up for success when using the positive reinforcement techniques.

by John Charles

This article is written so that you might be aware of the various forms of dog training aids that are available to you.

In order for you to be able to know and understand your dog, it is essential that you take up some form of dog training, but with such an array of training possibilities available it is not always easy to know which one is right for you and your dog.

You may or may not be aware that as your dog goes through his various stages of development, so his training needs will change. It is not true that one size fits all!

I highly recommend that you sit down and work out just what sort of training would be best for your dog. Do take into account whether or not your dog has already had any form of training.

The basic level of training, the first level, is for beginners – puppies, and those older dogs who are being introduced into training for the first time. As the name implies, your dog will learn the basic things such as when to sit, or when to stay, and when to come when called. Its quite elementary, but vital.

Next up is the intermediate level. Obviously this is a bit more advanced than basic training, and it really is not too suited to puppies. It is ideal for those older dogs who have had a bit of training, either formally in a class, or by their owner at home. The training will be aimed at teaching your dog how to walk to heel, how to fetch something when asked, and how to walk on a leash without pulling, or dragging behind.

Finally we come to the advanced level of dog training. You should only consider advanced level training if your dog has completed successfully the more elementary levels of training. What normally happens in the advanced class is that your dog is taught to respond to both your commands, and hand signals. Commands and signals such as come, stay, sit, fetch, heel, lie down, and so on.

Once your dog is comfortable with responding to hand signals then you can move on to teaching your dog how to walk beside you without being on the leash. The training will also teach your dog how to pay attention to you, and not be distracted by other people or dogs that they might see whilst out walking. This of course is indeed advanced training and hence it is only suitable for obedient and well behaved dogs.

Like all good training, dog training should also have motivators like prizes and rewards to yield better and more positive results. Hitting and yelling at the dog to make it pick up one action is not a wise technique while training. Instead of being a success, chances are that it will give negative output. So you must make sure that the dog training you assign your dog is a positive one, which indulges in positive strategies.

You must also be careful about choosing the right course for your dog”the course best-suited to it. That way, you may soon be able to boast of owning a dog that is obedient, well-mannered, well adjusted and the perfect pet one can have!

A bloodhound and mastiff mix. Can you imagine? These beautiful mastiff dogs can sniff out something as well as being as gentle as possible. They are originally from Brazil and have the original name of Fila Brasileiro. When they were first around, they were made to watch out for the plantations, then they were later brought to the United States by a group called the Conquistadors.

These gentle giants can easily weigh over 100 pounds, and stand up to 30″ tall. Having the flabby neck and long face of bloodhounds, their fur varies in color from reddish to black, even yellow. Brindled specimens are the most popular however.

Gentle like most mastiffs, they are capable of aggression when called for. Excellent guard dogs, they are nonetheless very good with children. They are also famed for their loyalty.

Brazilian Mastiffs still are seen in hunting, being as good at the job as their bloodhound relatives. They specialize in tracking down and catching prey while waiting for their owners to catch up; in fact, the “Fila” in “Fila Brasileiro” is from Portuguese and means “hold”.

These are an athletic breed although some Mastiffs are not athletic at all and they even are known to become obese. Again they get their athletic abilities from the bloodhound side. The guarding side comes from the Mastiff. Mastiffs are very watchful dogs and although they aren’t aggressive in nature, they will guard their family.

A downside to the breed is that they are not good at dealing with strangers. They have been known to attack strangers with no provocation or warning. For this reason, they should be kept locked up if say, a repairman is coming.

It is best to keep your mastiff locked up if you will have houseguests, as Brazilian Mastiffs have been known to attack without provocation – this unfortunate quality extends even to mastiffs entered in dog shows and the judges.

If you are getting a new Brazilian Mastiff puppy, choose very carefully. Be certain that the breeder is reputable; don’t be afraid to ask for references.

Any dog owner knows how difficult it is to walk a dog that pulls on the leash or simply refuses to walk. While basic dog training for any breed should involve lead training, the larger breeds in particular need to learn this as puppies. There’s nothing more unpleasant than trying to take your Husky or German Shepherd out for an evening stroll and having them fight the lead all the way.

With that in mind, here are five tips to make lead training your dog a little easier . 1.Start young. It’s far easier to start with puppy training in Toronto than it is to teach an older dog not to pull on the leash. While not impossible, it’s best to start out with a young dog that hasn’t yet picked up any bad habits. You can easily accustom a young puppy to the lead and he will be happy to treat it with respect for the rest of his life, but the trick is not to wait too long.

Start your puppy off with a collar and then progress to the leash and you’ll find that the entire process is far easier on both you and your dog. This can be one of the first puppy training methods that you use.

2. Be gentle. This is not a time to be rough. Whether you are working with a puppy or an adult dog, obedience is not going to come about through intimidating your dog. That’s why it’s important not to use a choke chain on your dog while lead training, as this will give it the wrong idea about leads. Dog training should be done gently, with respect for your canine and you’ll find that he responds better.

3. Go slowly. There’s no need to leap into walking down the street with your dog. Training can be done slowly and it will be much smoother for it. For example, start with the collar only at first. Once the puppy is used to this, you can progress to attaching the lead. Try doing this while the puppy is being fed so he’ll associate it with something good. Then, once he’s used to having something attached to the collar, you can start picking it up. Don’t rush and you’ll be fine.

4. Nip bad habits in the bud. It’s important not to let your dog training go the wrong way. If your puppy is starting to pull on the lead, you’ll need to make sure you stop that little problem right away. A firm “no” and a little tug on the leash will usually work when used consistently, but you’ll have far more success with rewarding the right behavior. Which brings us to our next tip . . .

5. Praise and reward. Dogs want to please their humans and yours will be no exception. Even a few words of praise will go a long way toward making your dog want to continue the behavior. The great thing about this method of puppy training is that you can’t go wrong! As long as you are consistent with the reward or praise, your dog will rapidly learn the new behavior . . . in this case, walking on a lead.

There are a lot of advantages to having your dog trained to use a leash and not pull. For one, you’ll be able to enjoy walks out with your dog and so will your canine friend. It’s also safer, as any dog obedience class will teach you, since you don’t need to worry about your dog getting loose and running out into the street when he’s walking happily beside you.

Dogs are acknowledged to be man’s best friend, you as the owner of the dog, are responsible for training your dog, if you want him to live up to being mans best friend. when you take home that cute little dog it has a loving and unruly nature. What he requires is discipline and that’s you come into play.

On the whole dogs are usually the most adorable of pets, inherently loyal, fun loving, comforting and always amusing. All The Same, you have to face the fact that dogs are three years old standing in terms of discipline. That is why a training program early is required. Dogs utterly love their owners affection and wish to please them. It is up to you to make your puppy recognise what is required of him in the way he behaves. In their view, life is in a never-ending state of fun. They have no idea what is good or bad conduct, unless you let them know what is. One of the most everyday dog behaviour problems you will have stop is the biting puppy syndrome.

Pups like to chew on everything, as any dog owner will tell you. The biting puppy may have a nice time chewing on your slippers, a book or a tasty bone. He should be able to enjoy any of his bones, but you want to provide the guidance to their behavior, so it keeps your pet away from your carpet slippers. They do not know that there is a difference, unless you let them know. If you let your pet do as they want, you may soon have an irreverent biting pup, with everything in their approved list of biting behavior. If you are an irresponsible dog owner you will have no one to blame but yourself for this, when he graduates to bite you, your kids or your neighbour every time he wants to. A biting puppy that is unchecked, will become a dog that bites, bringing you both in a lot of problems.

Like children, dogs need behavioural counseling. To get a biting pup to realise their are constraints is very easy. Where do you draw the line? Biting food and bones is a good rule. Anything else is breaking any understanding you have with your dog. If you allow them to chew on a old worn out pair of carpet slippers, this is giving them a license to bite and chew a variety of household items. He can not distinguish between things that are good to bite and those that they are not.

Pups that are teething are likely to be biting puppies. However, you might think its cute with the decimation role he played the day before, but you have to put your foot down. Dogs only understand the rules if they are absolute. Correct or not is Right. The punishment must also fit the crime. In the case of inanimate objects, a paper rolled up with a sharp noise report, should get your message across.

You must keep in reserve the most severe punishment for offenses involving your pup biting a human being. No matter how fun loving, or with no malice, a pup should be deterred from the idea that biting a person is acceptable. Let’s say that your son decided to share some pieces of fat from their plate with your puppy. He is for certain willing to share in this tasty morsel, inadvertently biting him. While your pet meant no harm, if you were to let this go unpunished, you are giving him a green light for a behavior that spells problems down the road.

In order to promptly and unequivocally nip the biting puppy behavior in the bud, you have got to come down on him hard. A sharp smack on the nose, removal of the food and the dog version of a time out is what you want to impose. Put his leash on and give him a taste of isolation out on the porch, along with a firm ‘bad dog’. This is language and action he can understand. He will know that his behavior resulted in a physical punishment, loss of the desired item and isolation from his family.

With this strategy, you can quickly and easily train your biting pup out of its bad habits. By the time your pet is six months old, you will have a small dog that knows its limits!

A simple and effective strategy for a good puppy training program

So you’ve got a new member of the family, an adorable puppy you hope will be with you for many long years. Having a puppy brings a lot of happiness, as well as responsibilities. An undisciplined pet makes for an unhappy relationship, so you’ll need to start your puppy training program soon. If you’ve never had a dog before, you may not know where to begin. Here you’ll find one good strategy to puppy training that results in a happy and well behaved dog.

Your puppy needs time to adjust to his new environment and family members. He’ll want to explore his new home and make friends with everyone. Puppies are so full of energy and natural curiosity, so you should expect that he’ll be getting into trouble somewhere along the line. For example, if you have a cat, be prepared for kitty to immediately get in your puppy’s face, with much fanfare, hissing and arching of back. Take care when you introduce these two. It’s best to make this introduction short and sweet, holding your puppy in your arms and out of kitty’s reach. Your cat will doubtless go off to sulk for awhile, choosing a perching point from which to keep her eye on this guy. Don’t force the situation – they will soon enough get used to one another. They might even become friends.

For the first few days, the only puppy training that needs to happen is potty training. Lay several sheets of newspaper down in the designated spot. This won’t happen overnight, but most puppies get the picture quickly. When an accident occurs, point to the undesired deposit and firmly, but not angrily, say, “No, no, no!” Carry him directly to the newspaper and set him down. Of course, he’s already done his business elsewhere. You want him to begin to associate the newspaper with the action. Never fear, he will eventually get the message. If two weeks pass without progress, talk to your vet for puppy potty training tips.

In the meantime, spend plenty of time playing with your puppy and be sure he’s getting all the exercise he needs. Put him on a leash and take him for short walks a few times each day, preferably after eating. Establishing this routine also helps make the potty training process shorter.

One important component of the puppy training process is grooming, which includes a bath. Make the bath water comfortably warm and use baby shampoo, so he gets used to this activity. You don’t want to try wrestling a 6 month old, 40 pound dog into a bath for the first time! Pet him and talk soothingly as you brush him well. Your puppy will grow to enjoy this attention.

Right along with potty training, you’ll want to gently chastise him, should he get hold of your favorite slippers. Puppies chew on anything. Providing him with chew toys will help him learn that the furniture is off limits, but he can chew on his toys to his heart’s content. He’ll catch on soon enough.

Barking is a dog’s job. When your dog barks, he wants to bring something to your attention. On the other hand, excessive barking is unacceptable. If your puppy barks if a bird flies by, he’s probably just bored and in need of attention. You want to nip excessive barking in the bud. If you don’t incorporate this into your puppy training program, you’ll have a tough problem down the road. Be sure he gets the attention he’s looking for before he makes an association between barking and receiving attention.

After three weeks with your new canine family member, he should be house trained, leash trained, eager for baths and grooming, barking appropriately and perhaps can even tolerate the cat. He’ll know about his chew toys and enjoy his daily walks.

Phase one of your puppy training program has been accomplished. Now, for phase two of puppy training. Go online and search out info on teaching the standard commands – sit, stay, lie down and heel. Your puppy is well prepared to upgrade his skills.
