Developing A Grooming Routine For Your Pet Rabbit
Good grooming is really important to rabbits and they pride themselves on being clean. In fact, rabbits spend a large proportion of the day keeping themselves well groomed and this in turn benefits their skin and coat texture.Just because your pet rabbit spends a huge amount of its day grooming itself does not mean that you are absolved from getting involved. It is crucial that you as a responsible owner should develop a rabbit care plan, which must be adhered to on a daily basis.
Brushing is a really important part of the grooming process. The time you spend brushing your pet bunny will go along way in establishing a lifelong bond. The health advantages of brushing your pet rabbit include the removal of any dead hairs that your rabbit might otherwise swallow. You want to avoid your rabbit swallowing high levels of fur because it causes hairballs which are hard to digest. If a hairball creates a blockage, your pet rabbit will need to go to the veterinarian where the resulting surgical procedure could cost a significant amount of money. It may be helpful to understand that on average a rabbit will shed its coat every 3 months and you may notice more hair loss at certain times of the year. Increase your brushing routine at these times.
Remember that your rabbit is a sensitive animal so do not use a hard, metal brush. Go for something softer that wont damage the skin.A well groomed rabbit really does look beautiful. Many owners see brushing as a chore, but this is not responsible pet ownership. Do all you can to brush your rabbit on a daily basis.Rabbits with long hair can suffer from matting, so try and keep the length manageable either by visiting a grooming salon or cutting it yourself at home. This help keep the rabbit’s coat clean and free of mats but also keeps the rabbit more comfortable during the hot summer. You need to be really careful when cutting your rabbits fur and if your rabbit tends to fidget or run off then this is perhaps one task that is best left to the experts.Any area of matting should be carefully combed through. Try and comb it out rather than simply chopping it off.If the matted area cannot be combed through please ask an expert to remove it. Don try it yourself as you may end up cutting the rabbits skin.
In addition to the fur you also need to kee an eye on your rabbits nails.Occasionally you need to get your rabbits nails trimmed. As this is a tricky task (rabbits don’t like having their nails cut!) you should leave it to the professionals.
