The Truth About Bark Off
Trying to find out about this Bark Off unit that everybody is talking about lately has not been easy. Every link that one looks at seems to be just another product pitch, rather than anybody giving any details about what it really does, or how it works, etc.
How does the device actually work? Why would an ultra sonic sound emitted from a little box have any effect on your dog? If it does work, why does it work? With only advertisements to answer your questions it turns out to be rather difficult to get any answers at all. At the very least, you should know how it works to help train your dog. Have you ever noticed how your dog has come to expect certain things at certain times throughout the day?
Dogs are typically creatures of habit. Barking, unfortunately, is a habit they take to very easily. They develop habits rather easily, which is why they are often easy to train. Barking is just another routine behavior to them most of the time. If they know that they are to go for a walk right afterwards, they will finish eating and then go to the door. It is the routine.
You distract them. The reason they continue these behaviors is because they don’t have a reason not to.
This is why the Bark Off system would work efficiently. It is triggered by the sound of a bark, so if the dog barks during a time when barking is inappropriate, it can change the dog’s behavior pattern by distracting it with an ultrasonic sound. If you turn the device on during the times when barking is unacceptable, you’ll have the best results. It may take a few days before the pattern of behavior is broken completely, and it is also possible that the results may eventually wear off if it is used too often and the dog becomes accustomed to the sound. The drawbacks to this method may be that if it is used too often or for too long, the dog may become used to the sound and it will no longer interest her enough to stop barking and check it out.
