Dogs need exercise, and the activity they love more than any other is walking. However, many dog owners shirk the responsibility. Perhaps they simply don’t have time, or maybe they don’t realize how important it is to walk their dogs.

Others give it a go, but give up after being hauled around the neighborhood one time too often by an unruly dog. If any of the aforementioned scenarios describes you, pay attention, because I’d like to share a piece of information that every dog owner should know.

“Dogs must be walked!”

As any dog trainer will tell you, a dog needs to be exercised every day. Depending on breed, age, size and so on this can range from a short 30 minute walk, to hours of vigorous activity. But the point is that exercise is essential, and walking is probably the best exercise there is for a dog.

But dog walking involves more than a just leashing your dog and setting off. Some simple guidelines will make it a lot easier for you, and more enjoyable for the dog.

Here are a few dog walking best practices for you to follow;

* Walk when its cool, rather than in the middle of the day. If however you do walk in hot weather it is important to take water along for your dog, to prevent over heating.

* Don’t allow your dog to walk in front of you or he may get the idea that he is the pack leader and this will encourage him to pull. Always walk with the dog by your side.

* Always keep slack on the lead. Every time you pull the dog back you just encourage him to pull in the opposite direction. Rather stop, wait for the dog to calm down, then continue.

* Maintain control of the walk. Don’t allow you dog to dictate direction and particularly when to stop. Sniffing around and marking should only happen when you allow it.

* Where possible, avoid other dogs. You have no idea of another dog’s temperament and matters can quickly get out of hand. If your dog is small, pick him up if a big dog approaches aggressively, if you have a big dog just walk in a different direction and avoid a confrontation.

An unvaccinated dog may also be a health risk to your dog, so its better to be safe than sorry.

* Choose a collar and leash (or a harness) that is comfortable for your dog, but that also gives you complete control over the dog. Also make sure that your dog is wearing an id tag, just in case he gets away from you.

Wearing an identification tags gives you the highest probability that he will be returned safely. For the same reason it is advisable to have your dog micro-chipped.

* Lastly, enjoy yourself! Hanging out with your dog is one of the funnest things you can do, two buddies working out together and enjoying the pleasure of each others company. What could be better.

When it comes to diversity, no species on earth rivals the dog. Our canine friends come in a vast array of sizes, shapes and colors. Not only that, but they also display vastly different character traits from one breed to another.

A lot of this is due to human intervention. For thousands of years we have bred and interbred dogs to accentuate particular skills and physical characteristics.

However, recent studies suggest that many of the physical changes in dogs may have occurred spontaneously. So as amazing as it is, it seems dogs have actually evolved along the lines they believe we expect of them. Now that’s what I call devotion!

Fascinating stuff, but there’s also a practical purpose to all this.

Say you wanted to buy or adopt a specific breed of dog. I’m pretty sure you’d want one that fits in with your lifestyle. If, for example, you’re someone who works long hours and has little time to exercise your dog, it would be irresponsible to adopt a highly active dog like a Border Collie. That would not only be cruel, but a recipe for disaster.

Likewise, if you’re an outdoor type who wants a dog as a jogging and hiking companion, a Pug or Pekingese is hardly going to fit the bill.

And there are lots of other things you need to think about too. Consider the behavioral aspects you are looking for in a dog. Do you want a dog that is affectionate or independent, protective or laid-back, calm or excitable? Do you mind if the dog is a barker? Are allergies an issue? The answers to these questions will help you make an informed choice.

Then there are physical characteristics. You may prefer a larger or a smaller dog. Well, it’s hard to imagine a greater discrepancy than between a Great Dane and a Chihuahua. It’s almost difficult to believe that they belong to the same species!

Another factor you need to take into account is the amount of hair the dog sheds. Some dogs shed enough hair to make another dog, while others hardly shed at all. And if shedding is really an issue there are hairless dogs, like the Xoloitzcuintle.

Trainability is another factor that should be considered. If you’re determined to obedience train your dog, then you’ll want a breed that is pliant and obedient, not the canine equivalent of an obdurate mule.

So if trainability is an important factor you’ll want a dog that is a quick learner with an eagerness to please. Dogs that fall into this group include the Poodle, Papillon and Golden Retriever.

At the other end of the scale you’ll find the the hounds – stubborn, obstinate and downright bloody-minded. Dachshunds are said by some (only half-jokingly) to be impossible to train, while some toy dogs just can’t be bothered to pay attention.

And we haven’t even gone into cross breeds and mixed breeds here.

But I’m sure you realize by now that there really is a dog to suit every person. So, what’s your dog type?

The Airedale Terrier is the largest of the terrier breeds. The ‘King of Terriers’, as it is known, stands up to 24 inches and the shoulder, and can weigh up to 65 pounds.

The Airedale is an easy dog to recognize, as the breed has a pretty unique profile and a wiry coat that is always black and tan. These dogs display the typical ‘terrier temperament’, which is to say that they are alert, active and ready to face up to any challenge.

The breed originated in the narrow strip of land between the Aire and Wharfe rivers in Yorkshire, England. The early Airedales were a result of crossing the Welsh terrier and the Otterhound. These dogs went by several names, Waterside Terrier, Bingly Terrier, and Rough coated terrier among them.

As the standard became more defined the breed was recognized by the UK Kennel club (in 1886), and became know as the Airedale Terrier.

By now, the Airedale was already well-known for its tenacity, hard work and reliability. Originally a hunting dog iot quickly made the transition to police dog, guardian and military messenger during World War One.

These are active, independent and highly intelligent dogs. They are generally easy to train, but have a decidedly stubborn streak and also become bored quite easily. It is therefore important to base training on short, very focused sessions.

In addition to their obvious value as working dogs, they also make great family pets. They are fun-loving dogs who love to be involved in family activities and particularly enjoy playing games.

These are generally healthy dogs who suffer from few of the dread diseases that afflict other breeds. They are not however, without their problems and are prone to hip displaysia, eye problems and skin disorders, in particular hot spots. Gastric torsion, also known as bloat can also occur and requires immediate veterinary attention. The Airedale has an average lifespan of 12 years.

Grooming an Airdedale can he a challenge, with the rough wiry coat requiring hand stripping. This job is best done by a professional groomer, although the owner will still have to give the dog a daily brush down.

The Airedale is a low shedding breed, so it is a good for those who have a particular aversion for dog hair. It may even be suitable for allergy sufferers.

These dynamic terriers are not suited to the sedate life. They do best with an owner or family who are able to meet their considerable exercise needs, and are most definitely not suited to living in an apartment.

As with most active breeds, they will look for ways to amuse themselves if they are bored, and this can lead to destructive behaviors like digging, chewing and problem barking.

Finding dog names, for your Airedale Terrier is an easy task, when you know where to look. My recommendation is puppy names hq.com, a site with an extensive database of dog names including 1000s of boy dog names to choose from.

In recent years there have been several cases where commercial dog food has caused severe illness, and even death, in pet dogs. As a result, many pet owners have begun to mistrust the pet food companies. Many would prefer to move away from commercial dog food, but simply aren’t aware of any alternative.

If you’re one of those searching for an alternative, read on. This article provides some guidelines to making homemade food for your dog.

It’s no secret that most commercial dog food is not good for your dog. Many of these foods are packed with processed grains which have no nutritional value and are known to cause all manner of allergies in dogs.

And then there are the chemical based colorings and flavorings which have been connected to all manner of diseases, including cancer.Even the meat that these foods contain is low grade – generally the parts considered unfit for human consumption.

Of course, not all commercial dog foods should be tarred with the same brush. Some, in particular the premium brands, are of much higher quality than what I’ve described. However, it is doubtful wether they provide the same level of nutrition as a whole food diet, so you may want to consider that for your dog.

Here are three quick tips to get you started;

Quality is important. Feed your dog good cuts of unprocessed meat, fresh vegetables and unprocessed fiber, like brown rice. Avoid at all costs, junk food, table scraps and highly processed foods, like white bread.

Remember that your dog is an omnivore, and needs vegetables as well as meat. As a rough rule of thumb try for a three way split between meat, vegetables and fiber. If you’re going to err slightly in any direction, feed more meat because protein is very important in a dog’s diet.

Dogs have a poorly developed sense of taste so don’t bother too much with seasonings. In fact, highly seasoned food may actually cause diarrhea,

Also remember that not all foods that can be safely consumed by humans, are good for dogs.

Just about everybody knows that chocolate is harmful, but are you aware that there are many other human foods that are dangerous, even potentially lethal, to your pet?

Onions, garlic, raisins, grapes, macadamia nuts are just some of the foods that fall into this category. Other things, like table scraps and junk food may not be deadly, but are just as dangerous, causing obesity and a plethora of related health problems.

Something else that not many dog owners consider is that giving bones to dogs can be dangerous. A bone that can be crunched up and swallowed may damage the stomach and intestines, while there is a risk of salmonella poisoning from raw bones.

By following the simple guidelines above you can quite easily switch your dog to a nutritionally balanced home cooked diet. You should, however, speak to your vet before making the change.

Originally bred to combat poachers in 18th century England, the Bullmastiff is a massive, muscular, and powerful dog. During the latter part of the 18th century, poachers were the bane of English country estates, and a dog was sought to assist gamekeepers in apprehending them. Unfortunately, the dogs of the day were either too vicious, or too slow, so a new breed was created by crossing the Bulldog and the Mastiff. The resulting dog was fierce, powerful, but pinned the poacher down, rather than mauling him.

With size, quickness, agility and obedience, the Bullmastiff was excellent at its job. Ad to that its fearsome looks, and only a very foolish poacher would chance his luck.

Standing up to 27 inches at the withers, and weighing as much as 130 pounds, this dog just exudes power and strength. The head is huge with a somewhat undershot jaw. The coat is short, in tan red or brindle, normally with a darker face mask.

Despite its size and fearsome looks the Bullmastiff is a true gentle giant. These dogs are affectionate, loyal and protective and form strong bonds with their family. They love human company and are particularly good with children, although they are not really suitable for very small children as they may accidentally knock them over.

With any dog this size obedience training is a must. They respond best to strong and consistent leadership, and should not be allowed to take liberties in the household. Likewise, socialization with other dogs and with people is highly recommended. Male Bullmastiffs are very and may not accept another male dog in the house.

Bullmastiffs live a relatively short lifespan of less than 10 years. They are prone to a number of inherited diseases including canine cancers, entropion and progressive retinal atrophy. They also suffer from two conditions common in large dogs, hip dysplasia and bloat.

As many as a quarter of all Bullmastiffs will develop hip dysplasia at some time. Bloat, or gastric torsion is even more serious, and results from a twisting of the stomach. This almost always results in death, unless the dog receives immediate veterinary treatment. You can reduce they risk by feeding small portions several times a day.

The Bullmastiff is easy to groom. The short coat requires only a good brush down a few times per week to keep it in top condition.

The Bullmastiff may look tough and rugged, but it is not an outdoor dog. Their coat offers little protection from the elements and besides, they are sensitive souls who want and need to be close to those they love.

Fortunately, they are no problem indoors, and are so quiet, calm and well behaved that they are even suitable for apartment living. The proviso is that they will need to get out every day for a long walk.

Finding good dog names, for a Bullmastiff can be a challenge. Your best bet is to use an online dog names database like Puppy Names HQ, which has literally thousands of excellent dog names, including a mega-list of male dog names.

Dogs are our closest allies in the animal world, but never forget that even your goofy Pug, or affectionate Shih Tzu is just one evolutionary step removed from the wolf.

For all our efforts at domesticating dogs, they are still very much part of the natural, animal world. We need to accept this, and adjust the way we interact with our dogs.

How Dogs View Their World

A dog’s thinking is based on drives and instincts. Their basic needs are food, a place to sleep, and a strong pack for protection. This means they need a strong leader – one they are prepared to follow without hesitation. This is the role you need to fill in your dog’s life.

The next key to understanding dog behavior is to remember that dogs do not understand words. This idea confuses many people because their dogs seem to understand every word the say. But, what you are seeing is merely word-association.

Dogs are incapable of understanding words, what they mainly understand is body language. They are attuned to associate action and reaction, so as your dog learns that certain actions bring reward he’ll be encouraged to repeat them.

As part of this chain of action and reaction, most dogs learn to react to single words, so he may for example learn to associate the word “walk” with going out, but most likely it is the “pre-walk rituals” – putting on his lead, for example – that he recognizes.

How to Think Like a Dog

The most important thing to remember is that dogs respond to body posture and tone of voice, rather than words. By understanding that your dog thinks in images and responds to actions, you will have a much greater influence over him.

Dogs pay a lot of attention to regular routines. If you always return home at a certain time your dog will anticipate and expect your arrival at that time. If you are caught up in traffic or otherwise delayed the dog may become anxious.

The reason is that he has built up an expectation based on his experience of your comings and goings. Based on that he expects a particular result. If that result is not forthcoming he becomes anxious.

How to be the Pack Leader

In the wild, the Alpha Wolf controls all the activities of the pack – when they eat, when they move, who receives affection. These are the same things you control in your dog’s life. By controlling when he receives food, walks, and attention you reduce frustration and anxiety.

Where does affection come into this? Excellent question. A strong pack leader knows when and how to reward a pack member with affection. Get this wrong and your dog will see you as weak. And dogs are great at exploiting weakness.

Affection should always be a reward. Give affection when your dog does something good and he’ll repeat that behavior over and over again.

One of the accessories no dog owner can afford to be without is a dog crate. This versatile receptacle has many uses, one of the most important of which is an enclosure for safely transporting your dog.

Before you rush out to buy a dog crate, though there are some of the important things to consider.

Size

You need to consider the size of your dog as well as the available space in your vehicle. You’re first consideration should be a crate that will safely and comfortably accommodate your dog. But you’ll also need to make sure that the crate fits into your car.

Don’t ever buy a crate that is too small, just because it fits your car. Your dog should always have enough space to lie down and turn around. Not much more than that though or the dog may “go” in the crate.

Ventilation

Be sure to buy a crate that has adequate ventilation, because dogs overheat quite easily, especially in warm weather. This is particularly important if you have a short-faced breed, like a Pekingese or a Bulldog.

Protection

There are 3 types of crates – the moulded plastic variety, the wire “cage”, and the vinyl “carry bag”. Of these, the hard plastic case is preferable for transporting your dog as it provides the highest level of protection.

Hygiene

A dog won’t normally “go” in his crate, unless he has too much space to move around (as described above). However, accidents do happen, and when they do, you need to be able to clean the crate out.

Fortunately, most crates are designed for easy cleaning. The plastic crates are usually very easy to take apart, then wash down and re-assemble.

View

Some dogs become stressed when put into a confined space, especially if they can’t see out. For these dogs the best option is to use a wire crate, as it allows the dog a 360 degree view and probably doesn’t feel like being in a crate at all.

Dog crates make it possible to safely transport your dog by car, but some are just better at to the job than others. Plastic crates offer the best solution for safety, are easily cleaned, and suitable for small to medium dogs. For bigger dogs, or dogs that become stressed in small spaces you can use a wire crate. This still provides protection although not as much as a plastic crate, so compensate by putting in extra cushioning.

Soft crates are not an option for transporting your dog as they provide little or no protection.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a small, affectionate toy dog. The breed is closely linked with King Charles II of England, who absolutely adored these dogs and is said to have given his Spaniels the run of the royal palace.

An the breed’s popularity with the aristocracy didn’t end there. Look at 16th to 18th century portraits of the well-to-do, and you’re likely to see a Cavalier featured.

These adorable little characters are just 13 to 18 inches tall and weigh up to 18 pounds. The coat is long and silky, and can be a number of colors including black and tan, ruby, tri-color and Blenheim.

The legs, ears and tail have extensive feathering, and when you add in the long, silky eyes are large, innocent eyes, the overall effect is most appealing. The tail has traditionally been docked, but this practice is no longer allowed in many countries, and has fallen out of favor.

The main difference between the Cavalier and the King Charles Spaniel is that the King Charles has a shorter muzzle. This dates back to a time when these dogs were cross bred with Pugs.

Despite its Spaniel credentials, the Cavalier King Charles has always been a companion dog, a role they fill to perfection. They are extremely affectionate and happy little dogs that just thrive on attention, and are eager to please.

This is just about the perfect family pet, gentle with children, good with other animals, and loving towards everyone. They are healthy dogs, but not immune to the congenital problems typically found in purebred dogs. Serious diseases that occur in the breed include mitral valve disease and syringomyelia. Typical lifespan for a Cavalier is between 9 and 14 years.

They are also prone to luxating patella, cataracts, and retinal disorders. You can minimise the chance of your dog contracting these diseases by buying from a reputable breeder who follows ethical breeding practices.

With their long, luxuriant coats, it should not surprise you that the Cavalier King Charles is a high maintenance dog. The coat requires daily brushing and regular trimming, especially around the toes and footpads.

As with all Spaniels breeds, the ears are particularly prone to infection, while the eyes can also become infected if not cleaned regularly.

If you’re looking for a dog to keep in an apartment, the Cavalier is the perfect choice. They are small and well-behaved and love being close to their human companions.

They do however require regular exercise and enjoy a daily walk with their owner. These playful, active dogs also love playing games like tag and hide-and-seek, which can be done either indoors or outdoors.

If you’re looking for puppy names, for your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, I’d recommend Puppy Names HQ, a site with an extensive database of dog names, including thousands of male dog names.

Dogs are the most diverse of all animal species. Within the genus Canis lupus familiaris, you’ll find a dizzying array of sizes, body shapes, coat lengths, and coat colors.

The amazing thing is that all of these dogs, whether it’s a Whippet or a Mastiff, a Kuvasz or a Xoloitzcuintle, has a virtually identical body structure, as well as similar patterns of behavior.

It is pretty much common knowledge that all domestic dogs share a common ancestor, the wolf. Now, through selective breeding we may have tinkered with the appearance of the dog, but under the skin his anatomy is still virtually identical to the wolf.

Like the wolf, a dog has;

* A skeletal structure designed for running and pursuing their prey.

* Loose and flexible front legs with disconnected shoulder bones that act as shock absorbers when running.

* Heavily muscled hind legs allowing for a burst of speed off the mark, as well as for leaping on prey.

* Small, tight feet, with fused wrist bones allowing them to quickly change direction, even when running at speed.

* A cardiovascular system that gives them the stamina to stay on the trail of prey for hours if necessary.

* A tail which allows them to signal other pack members – vitally important for co-operative hunters

* Powerful jaws with specialized teeth, for catching, holding and tearing prey.

Other Interesting Facts About Dog Anatomy

Although many of the physical characteristics of modern dogs are due to selective breeding recent research suggests that numerous changes may have occurred naturally.

Despite the many variants in coat colors, all dog coats except black are a variant of yellow. Black coats are down to a mutation of the beta defensin gene.

Dogs have a system for regulating body temperature. This includes, panting, sweating through the pads of their paws, and a complex “heat exchanger” that isolates body heat from the brain.

A dog’s jaw contains 42 specialized teeth – 6 pairs of sharp incisors for cutting, two pairs of large canines, or fangs, for killing their prey, plus premolars and molars for crushing and grinding their food.

Dogs have a unique system for keeping their eyes clean, a top and bottom eye lid, plus a third lid that sweeps across the eye like a windshield wiper.

All dogs have 361 bones, although quite obviously, the shape, size and placement of bones within different breeds, varies.

When a dog is startled or defensive it may raise a ridge of hair along its spine. This raising of the hackles is made possible by tiny muscles that are attached to each hair shaft.

Dogs have a very poorly developed sense of taste. This is actually key to their survival, as a dog will eat things that most other animals give a wide berth.

Dogs have survived, and thrived, as a species for thousands of years, mainly because they have an anatomy that makes them adaptable to just about any environment.

Canine Parvovirus, also commonly called CPV or parvo, is the most prevalent, infectious canine disease in the United States. It is highly contagious and often deadly, particularly because current vaccines do not protect against all strains.

Dog owners should therefore arm themselves with knowledge about the disease, it’s symptoms, how it is spread and most importantly, what to do if you think your dog may be infected.

Although CPV can occur in adult dogs, it most commonly affects puppies and young dogs, by attacking their underdeveloped immune systems. Certain breeds, including Doberman Pinschers, Labrador Retrievers, and Rottweilers are known to be particularly susceptible to canine parvovirus.

The first indication that a dog may have contracted parvo will be a high fever, along with general lethargy, depression and loss of appetite. The dog may then begin vomiting and may develop diarrhea, which has a distinct yellow look and a particularly foul smell.

As the disease spreads it will cause severe dehydration and the dog may go into shock. The virus may also enter the heart, causing heart failure. It is not unknown for heart failure to occur months, even years, after the parvovirus infection.

The most common form of parvovirus is enteritis, which attacks the digestive system, specifically the lining of the stomach and intestines. This makes it impossible for the dog to absorb fluids or nutrients, and manifests in bloody diarrhea. Left untreated, it will inevitably result in the death of the dog.

Even if the dog does recover he is likely to be weak and sickly for the rest of his life.

There is no known cure for parvovirus, and the treatment is largely supportive, for example, giving the infected dog IV fluids to prevent dehydration. The vet may also administer an intravenous balanced electrolyte solution, while antibiotics are usually given to fight off secondary bacterial infection.

If the dog has severe symptoms, an antiserum may also be administered, while corticosteroids are usually given to dogs that are in shock.

One of the reasons that Parvo is so dangerous is that the virus is extremely resilient. It is transmitted through contact with the faeces of an infected dog, and can live in ground that was exposed to the faecal matter for up to as six months.

It withstands most household cleaners and commercial disinfectants, although undiluted chlorine bleach has prove to be effective in killing it.

While current vaccines do not provide protection against all strains of parvo, it is still essential for you to have your puppy vaccinated.

You should also be very wary of allowing your puppy to interact with dogs you are not familiar with. In fact, you should not allow your puppy off your property until he has had his full set of shots. Better to be safe than sorry.

In the past, someone who was looking for a dog almost always bought, or adopted, a puppy. But these days it is just as likely that a prospective dog owner will head for the local shelter and bring home an older dog.

This is an admirable trend and one that should be encouraged, but it does raise some problems. Chief of these is that many of the dogs come with established behaviors and habits. Some are just difficult or stubborn, some have anxiety issues, others are outright aggressive.

Often this will result in the dog being taken back to the shelter, which is a pity because most dogs, regardless of age or temperament, are trainable if you employ a good method and put in the hours required.

Before you even start thinking about training though, there are two misconceptions you need to clear up. The first is that you should pity the dog.

Many of these dogs have unfortunate, heart-breaking and even tragic backgrounds. Some have been abused and neglected. They deserve your love, patience and affection. But they don’t need, nor want, your pity.

Dogs have an infinite capacity for forgiveness, so address your attention towards creating a home where the dog feels safe and to providing consistent but kind leadership, and gentle training.

The other mistaken belief is that the way to train a “difficult” dog is to make him comply by using force. This is a lie, plain and simple.

Outdated methods like choke chains and shock collars do not work. The are barbaric and no reputable trainer uses them. If someone even suggests them to you, just walk away.

These methods are possibly the worse thing you can do with an aggressive dog. Effectively what you’re doing is approaching an already aggressive animal with violence, and that my friend, is just asking to be bitten. So don’t ever use violent training methods with any dog.

How then, should you approach training an older dog? Well, for starters, appreciate that dogs are receptive to learning at any age. Start with the basics – crate training, and house training (if needed), then move on to basic obedience work. Above all keep it positive and reward-based.

You’ll need to be patient and persistent because your dog will already have established behaviors and will likely be more difficult to influence than a puppy.

Also bear in mind that not all dogs are as easy to train as others. Many factors come into play, such as breed, age and state of health. With an adopted dog there is also the issue of an unknown past life which may have left the dog traumatized and fearful.

Proceed slowly with patience and persistence and you will succeed. If you doubt that, look up Frank Inn on Wikipedia. This famous Hollywood dog trainer found almost all of his canine movie stars at dog shelters.

These dogs came to be closely associated with the cattle industry and were commonly used to guard butcher shops andherd lifestock to market. As a result, the acquired the name ‘Bouvier’, meaning ‘butcher’.

In the early days the dogs were bred exclusively for their working abilities. No attention at all was paid to appearance and Bouviers came in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, distinguishable only by their attitude and willingness to work.

During the Great War (WWI), they were recruited in large numbers by the military and carried messages on the front lines. Many dogs were killed as a result, and the breed was almost driven to extinction. The Bouvier was saved by a group of dedicated breeders who simultaneously set about defining a breed standard, and creating the dog we know today. What was retained though, was the Bouviers versatility and hard working nature. These dogs excel at all kinds of work, including guarding, police work, military work and search and rescue.

These are heavy, well-muscled dogs with a square profile and a strong muzzle. They have a double water-resistant coat, which is rough in texture and may be black, blonde, brindle, fawn, grey, or salt-and-pepper in color. A stand-out feature of the breed is their bushy eyebrows.

The Bouvier looks intimidating, but is actually a friendly, balanced dog. However, this is not a dog to be trifled with, the Bouvier has strong guarding instincts and is fiercely protective of its family. In general though, they are obedient and well-behaved with a playfulness that extends well into adulthood. They are intelligent dogs, and take well to training.

The Bouvier makes an excellent family pet. It is placid, good with children and tolerant of other dogs and pets. However it is very important to train and socialize your pet. Unsocialized Bouviers tend towards shyness, while an untrained dog, this big and powerful, is impossible to control.

These are tough, healthy dogs that suffer from few congenital diseases. As with most large breeds, hip dysplasia can be a problem, while various eye disorders also occur. The Bouvier has a high pain threshold, so be alert for any signs that the dog may be unwell.

Grooming is a serious consideration with this breed. The rough, heavy coat requires daily brushing, and cutting at least three times a year.

If you’ve decided to adopt a Bouvier, be prepared for a lot of exercise. Remember that, these are working dogs so they need plenty of exercise. You’ll need to give your dog a long walk every day, plus games and other activities to keep him happy. While a Bouvier can adapt to an apartment, a house with garden is a much better option.

Picking a name for your Bouvier des Flandres can be a challenge. The best advice is to visit some of the many puppy names, sites online. My recommendation is puppy-names-hq.com, which has a huge database, including thousands of cute dog names.

Dogs have probably been pulling on the leash since the first time someone thought it might be a good idea to loop a rope around one. They don’t like being restrained. So when you pull them back they instinctively pull the other way.

This isn’t dominant behavior, neither is the dog doing it to test your patience. He’s just excited and overwhelmed by all the new sights and smells. There’s so much to take in and he can’t wait to get there.

Now that you know that, use it to your advantage. Begin to teach your dog, that the walk isn’t happening, until he calms down and stops pulling. Here’s how to do it.

Teaching the Rules of the Walk

A dog’s world revolves around patterns of action, so they are very good at remembering your routine. I’m sure you’ve noticed how your dog gets excited even before you reach for his lead. You’ve probably wondered how he knows.

The probable answer is that he’s picked up on some routine you go through in preparing for the walk. A routine you probably aren’t even aware of yourself.

If you want to improve your dog’s behavior on the walk you should start right here. Don’t put up with any misbehavior. Specifically, don’t allow any boisterous behavior – barking, running, jumping up. Get him to calm down before attaching the lead. If he get’s out of hand, stop, get him to sit, then start over.

At first this can be very frustrating, but you need to be firm and consistent. It gets easier.

As soon as the dog has settled down, put on the leash and leave the house immediately. If the dog gets out of hand again, tell him to sit, wait for him to settle, then continue.

Most times, the dog will want to relieve himself the minute he is outside. Let him do this. Once he’s finished, that’s it – no more marking or sniffing around – keep him focused on the walk. For large sections of the walk you should allow no sniffing around at all. Make sure that any exploration he does is on your terms.

The Best Way to Stop Your Dog Pulling

If you want to stop your dog pulling, you need to stop pulling back. The way to control this behavior is to teach the dog that pulling has a negative rather than positive result. When he pulls, stop the walk and get him to sit. Only carry on with walking when he has calmed down.

You’ll find this very challenging at first, but stick with it and your dog will soon learn what he needs to do. He’ll soon realize that pulling only succeeds in stopping his walk.

Once he has ended his obsession with pulling, you should start teaching him to walk by your side, rather than in front. This will give you better control over the dog, especially if he suddenly spots something interesting to explore or chase.

One last tip – be sure to take a bag of treats with you while training your dog. Give him a treat when he obediently walks beside you and you’ll see even quicker results.

As a dog that was created specifically as a human companion, the Bichon Frise is a happy affectionate little dog, with a long and rather interesting history.

The breed originated in Spain during the 13th century, and is thought to have been created by crossing Poodles and Barbet Water Spaniels. They were used as an item of trade by Spanish sailors and as a result reached many European countries. In France, they became a particular favorite of the aristocracy, and by the 16th century, the Bichon was entrenched as the favorite dog of the French royal court.

The Bichon has always had an unsurpassed ability for learning tricks, and for this reason has always been a popular performing dog with circuses and other entertainment troupes.

The Bichon Frise is a small dog with a sturdy build. It stands up to 12 inches at the withers and can weigh as much as 12 pounds. The coat is soft and silky and is always white, sometimes with cream or apricot shading on the ears. The coat is hypoallergenic, meaning that this is a good breed for people allergic to dander. The Bichon is classified in the Toy Group..

Given their history as companion dogs it is no surprise that these little guys are renowned for their winning personalities. They form close bonds with their people and are known to be excellent with children. They also generally get on well with other pets in the household.

These intelligent and attentive little dogs are easy to train, except in one area – they can be a real hassle to housetrain.

In common with many small breeds, Bichons enjoy a relatively long lifespan, and quite commonly live for 15 years or more. Common health problems include canine cancers (especially in older dogs), cataracts, epilepsy, and fleabite allergies. Bichons may also suffer from a condition known as liver shunts, which needs to be corrected surgically.

As you’d imagine with that luxuriant, white coat, grooming can be a challenge. Your Bichon will require brushing every day, and the coat will also have to be trimmed regularly to keep it in shape. You can also bathe the dog once a month, but don’t overdo it as the dog has sensitive skin. Also be sure to use a mild, dog shampoo.

It goes without saying that this is an indoor dog. The Bichon is perfect for apartment living and needs to always be close to his human family. They are quite prone to separation anxiety, and should therefore not be left unattended for long periods. As with all dogs, the Bichon needs regular exercise, and while much of this can be met with indoor games, you’ll still need to get your dog outdoors for a short walk daily.

Good names for a Bichon Frise can be hard to find. The best advice is to search one of the online puppy names, sites, and my personal favorite is Puppy Names HQ. This site has thousands of excellent dog names, including a mega-database of female dog names to pick from.

With its short, stout build, bandy legs, short muzzle and prominent under-bite, the Bulldog is one of the most recognizable dog breeds. There is much dispute about the breed’s origins, but what we do know is that they were quite widespread in England by the early 1600’s.

Those Bulldog’s had little in common with the placid breed we know today and were particularly fierce. Used extensively in the cruel blood sports of bull baiting and dog fighting the breed flourished. But after those ‘sports’ were banned in 1835, the breed fell into decline, and might well have become extinct were it not for the foundation of the Bulldog Club in 1864.

Today, the Bulldog has left his violent past behind him, and is a gentle, good-natured and affectionate companion dog.

The Bulldog is a medium sized dog with a short coat that can be red, fawn, white, brindle or piebald. The body is compact and sturdy, with bowed legs a large head, and loose fitting skin. The look may be fierce, but the dog certainly isn’t, at least not to those he knows. These are incredibly loving dogs who form close bonds with their owners and are very protective of their family. The Bulldog has not however, lost all of his fighting spirit. He is a very good guard dog, brave enough to take on any intruder.

Obedience training is very important with this breed as they tend towards dominant behavior and are known to ‘guard’ items, or even people, who they claim as their own. You will need plenty of patience to train a Bulldog though. They have a well deserved reputation for stubbornness, and the term “stubborn as a Bulldog”, has plenty of basis in fact.

Bulldogs are known to live for as long as 12 years, although the average lifespan for the breed is just 6.5 years.

Unfortunately, the Bulldog is a breed with a lot of health problems. They are prone to a catalog of health problems including hip dysplasia, heart failure, cancer, patellar luxation, cherry eye, and various skin disorders. Like most short-faced breeds, Bulldogs are also prone to breathing problems, especially in warm weather. Bulldogs are known to be prodigious snorers and are also prone to flatulence.

Bulldogs are not the most active of dogs and are quite happy to lounge around on the couch, making them the ideal dog for someone with limited space. Still, regular exercise is important, and you should give your dog a short walk every day. Be careful not to overexert your dog though, as Bulldogs can overheat quite easily, especially in hot weather.

The English Bulldog may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but the breed has plenty of fans, and many who have owned a Bully would not have any other dog breed.

If you’re searching for puppy names, for your Bulldog, I recommend puppy-names-hq.com. This site has 1000’s of excellent dog names, including a huge list of girl dog names choose from.

The Basset is an easily distinguishable dog, with its long ears, solid build and droopy mournful face. These dogs, which first arrived in Britain with the invading Normans in 1066, are believed to descend from the St Hubert Hound. Later in their history, they were crossed with other hound breeds to add size.

The name, Basset ,derives from “bas”, which means low in French.

Bassets are renowned for their sweet and gentle dispositions. They get on with everyone, including children and other pets. They are naturally calm and well-mannered dogs who are affectionate to their owners and love nothing more than being close to their family.

In fact, they are so agreeable that it is easy to forget that this is a hunting dog, and a very good one at that. These days though, Bassets are seldom seen as working dogs, and are more commonly family pets.

Grooming a Basset Hound is a relatively simple task. The coat is short and requires only a brush down a couple of times a week to keep it looking its best.

In addition, you will have to pay special attention to the ears, which are susceptible to bacterial and fungal infections. Wipe them down with a damp cloth, being careful to dry them afterwards, and you’ll avoid most problems.

For dogs that aren’t that active, you’ll probably have to clip the nails every once in a while. This is a job that many dog owners dislike, but you can also ask your vet or grooming salon to do it for you.

As with all hounds, Bassets can be difficult to train. It’s not that they lack intelligence, but rather that they’ve been bred to think for themselves, and this can make them appear stubborn at times. The key is to be consistent and use positive reward based training. Bassets are sensitive souls and are easily hurt by harsh words and treatment.

You’ll need a lot of patience to train a Basset as they are easily distracted, especially if they pick up an interesting scent to follow. But persistence wins the day, so stick with it and you’ll see results. Bassets love to eat, so using really tasty treats will definitely help your training efforts.

Unfortunately, their love of food can translate to a number of obesity related diseases. A common concern with overweight Basset Hounds is vertebral problems, as the extra weight puts strain on the spine. Other health concerns include foreleg lameness, entropion, gastric torsion, and cysts on the paws. They may also be prone to osteochondrosis.

Bassets can be quite lazy, but it is important that they have daily walks to ensure they don’t become overweight. All in all, this is a wonderful, affectionate pet that is easy to live with and an absolute joy to have around.

If you’re looking for dog names, for your Basset, I’d recommend Puppy Names HQ, a site with an extensive database of dog names, including thousands of male dog names.

If your dog has fleas, then the only cure is going through dog flea treatment. These fleas can be dangerous as there are some that carry diseases. Preventing it from happening is better than finding a cure for it. These tips will help you in keeping those pesky fleas away from you and your dog.

1. Clean your dog often. This is one of the best and cheapest way in preventing dog fleas. For more protection from fleas, you may want to use flea repellent dog shampoos. If your dog has fleas, a good dog flea treatment while giving him a bath is to use a flea comb. The design of this comb is specifically made to get rid of those fleas from the skin and hair of your dog.

2. Don’t let your dogs come in contact with other dogs that are infested with fleas. This means that you have to tell your buddy next door to have his dog cleaned from fleas. Dogs love to play rough with each other so this opens a transport opportunity for fleas. Furthermore, make sure to have your dog flea-free first before letting it play with the neighborhood dog, otherwise you’d be expecting complains.

3. Give your dog a healthy diet meal. This ensures that your dogs’ immune system is strong. A good dog flea medicine food would be to mix in powdered garlic in their food so as to keep those pesky fleas away. A healthy dog is a happy dog. Be sure to ask your veterinarian for additional healthy dog diets.

4. Keep your home a flea-free place. If ever your dog has recently had fleas, you may want to check the surroundings for runaway fleas. They might go to the grass in the lawn, so cutting it short would be best. Schedule a general cleaning and clean every spot in your home. Other dogs from the neighborhood might have fleas, so regularly check the outside of your house.

To sum it all up, you must: wash your dog regularly, keep them away from flea-infested dogs, give them a healthy diet and finally clean your home inside and out, and check for any fleas. Asking your dog’s veterinarian for a dog flea treatment is only practical, whether your dog has fleas or not. Vets can help you out in your worry about fleas. Remember that fleas might carry diseases and they can be harmful not only to your pets but also to yourselves.

One of your first jobs as a dog owner is house training your puppy, and even if you do nothing else in terms of dog training, you’ll have to do this. That is, unless you are prepared to live with an animal that has no control over her toilet habits.

Fortunately, house training is not that difficult. All it takes is a proper method, plus some patience and success is literally guaranteed.

In fact, all you have to do to ensure success, is to tap into your dog’s natural behavior. For starters, dogs are, by nature, clean animals and will never “do their business” close to where they eat and sleep, except in extreme circumstances.

Secondly, most dogs have a strong desire to please their human companions, and will do just about anything to earn our approval.

There are a number of common methods for house training a dog, but whichever method you choose, keeping these two principles in mind will greatly increase your prospects of success.

Here are the most common puppy house training methods;

Supervision Method

Crate Training

Paper Training

Litter Box Method

The method you choose is entirely up to you, but my favorite is crate training. I have trained many dogs using this method and I am always blown away at how easy it is. This is probably because it taps the two aspects of dog behavior I mentioned earlier.

With crate training your puppy you use these behavioral aspects to your advantage – a much better approach than chasing your dog and trying to haul her outdoors, or to the paper every time she squats down.

You may however prefer one of the other methods, which is also okay – use what works for you. The most important thing is that you remain calm while toilet training your dog. Shouting and getting upset won’t achieve anything other than making the dog afraid of you.

Remember that you are dealing with a baby. If a baby messes her diaper you don’t scream at her, swat her with a newspaper, or rub her nose in it, would you? The same applies here.

Your puppy doesn’t understand what she’s done wrong (how could she?), but stick to your method consistently and she will soon ‘get it’. Dogs are intelligent animals, so your patience will pay off in the end.

Want to get even faster results?

Then give your dog lots of praise.

Your dog is desperate for your approval. So praise her when she gets it right and she will want to repeat the action over and over again just to earn more praise.

I don’t just mean a little pat on the head either – really lay it on thick – lots of praise, lots of enthusiasm, maybe even a game or a treat. Do this every time and before you know it you’ll have a house trained puppy on your hands.

Later, when you move on to basic obedience training, your pup will already understand that when she does what you ask, she gets praise and rewards. So house training actually lays the groundwork for all your dog training efforts.

The Australian Shepherd, or “Aussie” as it is sometimes called, is a dog with an interesting past. Perhaps the most interesting fact is that they are not Australian at all! The breed actually has its origins in the Pyrenees Mountains somewhere between Spain and France. Basque Shepherds originally brought these dogs to Australia, and when their descendents immigrated to America in the 1800s they took their dogs with them.

It was in America that the breed started to be called the Australian Shepherd. Previously, it had been known by a number of different names including, Spanish Shepherd, Bobtail, Pastor Dog, and Blue Heeler.

These intelligent, active and affectionate dogs make wonderful pets for the right person or family. The proviso is that any prospective owner should be an active person who involves the dog in a lot of outdoor activities and provides the dog with vigorous daily exercise. Dogs that lack physical and mental stimulation often develop behavioral problems, and that will almost certainly be the case with this breed.

The need to herd is still strong in this breed and you may notice that the dog tries to herd everyone within range, friends, family and other pets included!

The Australian Shepherd is a confident, self-assured and protective breed. They do tend to be somewhat cautious around strangers, but this should not be interpreted as timidity, they are just naturally wary.

They have a natural exuberance, but are very demanding of attention. The worst thing you can do to an Aussie is to exclude him from family activities and relegate him to the back yard. If you’re not able to give him your full attention, then this is not the dog for you.

But if you’re looking for a real buddy to share in all your adventures this dog may be the one for you. They are exceptionally easy to train and they particularly love competing, so canine sports like disc dog, advanced obedience and especially agility will be a real treat – both for you and the dog.

When training your dog, use a positive method that is proven to deliver results – something like clicker training. You’ll be rewarded with a happy, fulfilled and balanced dog, and just think how impressed your family will be when they see the amazing things your dog is capable of.

While the Australian Shepherd is generally a healthy robust dog, it is prone to a number of congenital diseases, including hip dysplasia, epilepsy, back problems and eye disorders. These dogs can live 12 to 14 years on average.

The easiest way to find good names for your Australian Shepherd is to visit an online dog names, resource, like puppy-names-hq.com. This site has tons of dog names, including 1000s of female dog names to choose from.

Choosing a dog breed is a big decision and not one that should be taken lightly. Choose in haste and you could be setting yourself up for a heap of trouble further on down the road.

It is vitally important that you pick a breed that matches your circumstances and lifestyle. How do you decide? Well you can start by thinking about the factors laid out below;

1.What is the size of your property?

Some people believe that you need a large property to keep a dog. This is simply no true, although some dog breeds definitely require more space than others. Keeping a high energy dog, say a Husky, or a Dalmatian, in an apartment is, quite simply, cruel. Not only that, but it is asking for trouble. You’ll end up with a highly stressed dog that has all kinds of behavioral problems.

If space is an issue, choose a small dog breed instead, but remember, you still have to get them outdoors for some exercise daily.

2. How much free time do you have?

As a dog guardian your number one concern should be the well-being of your dog. That means at least an hour of exercise everyday for most dogs. And for some, like your highly active herding and sporting breeds, you’re looking at two to three hours of physical activity per day.

Are you prepared to make that commitment? If not you should go for a dog with lower energy levels – a laid-back Pug perhaps. And there’s still training to consider. All dogs need at least basic obedience training. Some, like Poodles, Labs, and Golden Retrievers are relatively easy to train. Others, including most of the hound group, can be a real challenge.

3. How Active Are You?

If you love the active outdoor lifestyle, or if you have the kind of job where you can involve your dog, you’d probably do well with a dog that is a good match for your level of energy. You’ll probably want to choose a herding dog, or a working dog, like a Husky. These breeds love to work and really come into their own when given a job of work to do.

Another good option is the gun dog group. These dogs also have exceptionally high energy levels, but are less demanding than, say, a Border Collie.

4. Do you have kids? How old are they?

It should be obvious that if you have children, you’ll want a dog that is good with children. Labradors and Golden Retrievers are renowned for their sweet natures, which explains the enduring popularity of these breeds.

Others that fit the bill are Beagles and Boxers who, despite their size, are known for their gentleness with children.Be aware that smaller breeds, like Dachshunds and Chihuahuas, are not ideal for small children as they can be quite snappy, especially if provoked.

{Choosing a dog is an important decision and one that will impact on your life for the next 10-15 years. It is therefore advisable to make an informed decision. The questions above will get you started.|Choosing a dog is a big decision. What you do now will affect your life for the next 10 years and more, so choose wisely. Answer the questions above and you’ll be off to a good start.|Picking a dog is and important decision, and one you’ll want

Choosing dog names can sometimes be a breeze, and at other times can seem like a real chore. No matter what name you pick, it just doesn’t seem right.

Weeks pass, and your pup is still waiting to be named.

Eventually you pick a name out of desperation, which is quite possibly the worst thing you can do. After all you’re going to be spending many years with your dog, and you’re going to be calling his name many, many times. So the last thing you want is to choose a name that doesn’t fit.

Need some help? Then read our top 10 dog naming tips below.

1.You can’t go wrong with a one or two-syllable name. They are simple, easy to say and recognize, and there are literally millions of choices!

2.That’s not to say that more unique, unusual names aren’t a good choice too. But remember that lower name recognition can impact performance when you start training your dog. So if a name like Rumplestilskin floats your boat, I say go with it. Although you may want to come up with a “call name”, like “Rum”, or “Rumble”.

3.Names that are similar to voice commands are generally not a good idea if you plan on training your dog. Think about names that could be confused for a command, like “Ray”, for “stay”.

4.You’d also be well advised to steer clear of names that can be confused with that of another pet or a member of your household. Not unless you want to confuse everyone.

5.Don’t give your dog a name that will embarrass him. Beavis may be okay, but Butthead certainly isn’t! Dogs have feelings too.

6.Pick a name that works for your dog – think size, breed, color etc. “Maximus” may not be best suited to your Chihuahua – even if he thinks he’s 10 feet tall! Likewise, Tiny is not exactly an instinctive choice for a Great Dane.Of course, any of these could work, if you are trying for irony!

7.As cute as your puppy is now, remember that he will grow – and normally faster than you think. While “Bubbles” may work well for your Boxer pup, by the time he’s fully grown you may wish you’d chosen “Tyson” instead.

8.A dog breed’s origins often provide a rich source of names. Think of the country of origin’s famous people, places, traditions and institutions, and you’re halfway there.

Need some examples? How about, “Guinness” for an Irish Setter, “Yoko” for a Shibu Inu, or “Louis” to a French Bulldog.

9.You’ll also find myriad ideas by delving into your own interests. Music lover? Love Country, Metal or R & B? Try Skeeter, Ozzy or Whitney – or your own favorite.

Now think about what interests you and you’re well on your way to hundreds of great names.

10.Finally, where appropriate, find out a bit about the name you’ve chosen for your dog. With the internet, that’s a simple process, but no need to start googling, binging, or even yahooing.

Just visit us at Puppy Names HQ. We have thousands of the very best dog names on the web. And all you have to do is pick your favorite.

Pet stores are great companies. They differ in dimension and variety of merchandize, but they are popular and profitable in nearly any neighborhood. The pet shpt will be the place to buy a pet if you do not wish to adopt through an animal protection. Puppies, cats, parrots, ferrets, fish, turtles, hamsters and guinea pigs are generally found in pet stores, collectively with all the food and equipment that you need for them. Actually, every pet owner has to shop for pet supplies regularly: food, litter, playthings, leashes etc. If you love Animal Sories, you may also like to know more in the area of All About Dogs.

In recent years, pet stores have developed well online also. They provide a similar if not higher variety of products, and they save individuals money and time. Whenever you do not come across an item within the normal local pet shop, you will most definitely try on the web and eventually purchase it. The web has opened up the marketplace incredibly well, allowing individuals from various corners of your nation to shop from the same place. Place the order, come up with the online payment, and have the goods supplied at home. Every one of these, without leaving your home…

Nevertheless, you won’t have the ability to buy pets online within the same situations you do in normal pet stores. Live animals are more difficult to supply because of the unique travelling situations needed. What is great in certain local pet stores is the fact that you can discover notes from local pet proprietors who’ve puppies, kittens along with other baby pets they wish to give away. You can get the most effective pet ever before and do somebody a large favor if you take a puppy dog away. Even so, numerous pet proprietors choose spaying in order to steer clear of handling more pets than they can manage.

Some pet stores are unique in a certain kind of products. A expanding popularity continues to be noted for pet stores that promote natural pet food. In a couple of years, maybe we will notice more natural food shops for each humans and domestic pets, but at the moment, they are rare views in local communities. The word about natural pet food has spread around the world wide web, and more and more pet proprietors pay more interest to their household and their pet’s diet.

When a pet owner improves residing situations and lifestyle, positive adjustments would also occur in a dog’s existence. This is nearly usually true. That is why switching to natural pet food won’t be some thing that rare or unusual in a not so distant future.

If you want an animal companion you might adopt a pet instead of buying one. Millions of cats and dogs are euthanized each year in the United States Of America simply because the shelters are filled, the staff members are inadequate and tough choices seem along the way. The amount of people who adopt a pet is much lower compared to people who surrender their domestic pets. If you critically consider including a fresh member towards the family, please consider adoption. Verify your options before making a decision! That’s the fairest thing to complete! Find out more about Pet Lover and Animal Information.

First of all you will save a life!

Actually, you save two lives: whenever you get the pet from the pet shelter, a space frees up turning into available for another homeless animal somewhere. There are numerous places exactly where you could adopt a pet: animal shelters, local pet control companies or breed rescue groups.

Domestic pets in animal shelters are wholesome and well looked after!

Whenever you adopt a pet from a pet shelter or rescue organization, you have a number of benefits. You will find veterinarians who examine, deal with and vaccinate the animals at shelters. Furthermore, many shelters additionally run a ‘psychological’ conduct evaluation to identify animal conduct and temperament, to ensure that households could find the right for his or her house.

The idea that animals in shelters have already been abused or dumped there for misbehavior is a false impression. Most creatures that end up in shelters find themselves inside a tough situation simply because of their owners. Many people no longer possess the financial means to help keep a pet, others need to move out, a few households undergo a divorce and do not need the pet any longer. And the list of reasons goes on… and domestic pets endure most simply because they suffer a loss of individual affection and a house!

Adopt a pet and conserve money!

If you purchase a pet from a pet store or perhaps a breeder, you make investments a little fortune. If you go to a pet shelter or to a pet rescue center, you could have a genuine breed and a great companion for free. Furthermore, you get your pet with all the health care needed

It feels really great to have a pet around the home. You could enhance your physical and mental well being simply by investing time with the animal, going for a walk or grooming it. The atmosphere around the home is usually a lot more relaxed and constructive when there’s a dog or perhaps a cat about. Adopt a pet and you will see the difference for your self!

There is an estimate that in the UK, over a quarter of properties possess a pet cat and about a third have a pet dog. The human need for the company of animals is why, over thousands of years, a number of species have been adopted to keep humans company which means that their behaviour is noticeably different from their wild relatives.

It is this contrast that leads us to define pets as domesticated, and why we are comfortable for cats, dogs, plus a number of species of rodents and birds to share our homes with us. Also, there are quite a few species of wild animals which are also kept as pets by some people, but their behaviour dictates that they need to be kept in places which protect the human owner from their pet’s wild instincts.

Owning a pet is generally accepted to provide the owner with recognised health benefits, as pets are in many cases able to reduce stress levels, and can increase the individual’s sense of self worth, as the pet needs the owner to provide most of its daily requirements. Pets are known to be a help to the elderly and for those with some mental health issues, as well as being a friend to those who live without regular human company.

The domestic dog tends to be a loyal, trusting and friendly creature which will get involved in games and fun, and with the right attention and training can be remarkably obedient. The great variety of different breeds means that there will be a pet dog to suit everyone – from the largest liveliest dog running around a country estate to the most delicate little miniature breed often seen travelling in its celebrity owner’s designer bag! These pampered celebrity pooches probably have their own room, a chef to dish up their food, a personal dentist, a monthly booking at the grooming parlour and an appointment for Laser eye surgery if they need it!

And dogs can also be trained to help humans as well, as is the situation with guide dogs for the blind and hearing dogs for the deaf. To be able to train an animal so much that they can completely take over as eyes or ears is an amazing achievement. But I wonder what happens to guide dogs when they start to have vision problems or hearing dogs if they start to go deaf – do they get offered Laser eye surgery or hearing aids?!

The domestic cat is a much different sort of pet. Cats are usually self assured, independent and truly believe that everything should be arranged to suit them above mere humans. (Would you believe that I’ve owned cats recently?) At the same time, don’t let anyone tell you that it isn’t possible to train a cat! Although I would describe it as ‘educating’ instead of ‘training’ – it’s basically about the psychology! Cats are clearly lower maintenance than dogs in that they don’t demand to be exercised every day and can take care of themselves somewhat better if you are out of the house for more than a few hours. Whilst giving them their freedom, I always insisted that they stayed indoors overnight – I couldn’t be having one of those cat flaps that makes use of a magnet or breaking a Laser eye beam or whatever to open and close it – I’m convinced I would have found much more than just my own cats in the house!

Some people opt to keep rodents, including rabbits, hamsters, gerbils and rats, all of which make ideal pets, although hamsters are very often asleep during the day, so are not ideal for young children who want to handle the animals during the day. Rodents should reside in a cage (which should give them enough room to exhibit normal behaviour without being overcrowded), but some animals, such as rabbits, can be house trained and allowed to roam freely in the house. Also, ferrets can be housetrained and given the run of your property, and these mammals have become more and more popular as house pets in the last couple of decades. Personally, I’m a little dubious about leaving small animals such as these to have the freedom of the house – I’d probably have|need|want[/spin] to fit Laser eye security beams across all exit points, as I’d be fretting about them escaping and disappearing.

Some people also opt to keep pet birds, from talkative parrots and mynah birds to cages of finches, canaries and such like. Again, species including parrots can be permitted some freedom in the house if the owner wishes, but I have to say that personally I’m not really enthusiastic about birds as house pets, since putting them in a cage is removing their freedom to exhibit their normal behaviour and fly. (And yes, I know the same thing could be applied to anything in a cage, but somehow it seems more wrong with birds.)

Usually though, it is obvious that humans and animals can keep each other company and be good for each other at the same time. And for this we should acknowledge our distant ancestors who realised that it would be a good idea to welcome specific animals into their homesteads. At a guess I would say that the original reason for encouraging them was to assist with hunting and pest control, but whether that is accurate or not, it’s something all pet lovers should thank them for.

As a pet owner, you know that although pets are great friends and companions, they are also a big responsibility. A pet cannot tell its owner whether it is sick or injured, so a pet owner must always be on the look out for potential problems. <br><br>One of the big problems that many people have is pet disease and illness. Cats and dogs are not always as wary of the outdoors as humans are. They will leap into bushes and run through trees and grass without a moments hesitation. Unfortunately, this leaves them vulnerable to fleas and ticks. A cat or a dog cannot pull a tick from themselves and they can’t even ask you to do it for them. <br><br>For this reason, it is essential that we treat are pets with a reliable dog flea treatment. These treatments will help keep them safe from the diseases that these parasites carry. Scientists have found that the flea is more deadly than the tick. Ticks do carry very serious diseases like Lyme disease, so we do need to watch out for them. <br><br>The sad fact is however, that fleas can carry the plague as well as many other terrible diseases. These fleas can move from your dog or cat onto you. You can get these diseases and the health of your entire family can quickly become compromised. For those of you with fleas in your house right now, make sure you try hard to get rid of them. Buy a dog flea treatment now for your pet and then begin to spray the rest of your home. <br><br>Make sure you take care of your carpets, your clothing, and even your back yard. The washing machine will clean your clothing and some spray can kill fleas in your furniture, carpet, and even your yard. <br><br>Keep in mind that you can get rid of both fleas and ticks with one multi purpose <a href=”http://www.dog-fleatreatment.com/” target=’_blank’>dog flea treatment</a>. You’ll find that even though not all tick or flea solutions will destroy both, there are plenty that will. Kill two enemies with one treatment by making sure you get a treatment that attacks both problems. <br><br>Should you need additional information on dog flea treatment or flea and tick illnesses, you should visit my site. There you can find all the details you need to have a successful buy.

There are a lot of creative ideas in order to gain in money. This whole article will touch on the basic things that should be done while pet sitting. Pet Sitting is one of the most important things owners worry about while going out of town. People become very attached to animals, and they want to leave them in the best of care.

Water is the most important substance to keep animals, particularly dogs, full of. Dehydration will start after 24 hours of not drinking water, and after one to three days, the animal will go into critical condition, and it’s possibly that the result will be death. Keep a bowl of water available at all times, even while you aren’t there. By doing this, you are allowing the animal to come and go as it pleases.

Food is also require daily, of course. But, excessive amounts of it can cause a weight problem. Just like people, dogs must be careful with the amount of food consumed each day. I am talking mostly of dogs because they are the most common of animals that must have a pet sitter.

Over feeding is a problem with some pets. Owners leave food out all the time, and the animal eats as he/she pleases. This is a problem because the animal can become over weight, by over eating. Do not leave food out for your pet at all times. Depending on the breed and weight of your animal, feed it proportionally. You can receive the proper amount of food your dog should eat a day by contacting your local vet, and or researching it online.

For anyone who is interested in earning a living as a pet sitter, listing your services on all of the numerous sitter registries is an excellent way to start your career. They are affordable for people looking to use sitters for both children and pets, with lots of great savings available at sites like SitterSavings.com.

Walking a dog is also very important. By doing so, you are not only keeping them healthier, but you are expanding their life. Just like people, a dog’s weight can be a major issue. If the dog is heavy, the life expectancy will obviously drop. Walking your dog will allow it to not just feel healthy, but look the part, as well. And, dogs love to get out of the house and explore, anyways!

Animals have feelings, just like we do. Therefore, we should treat them right by taking care o them to the fullest. While pet sitting, take the animals feelings into consideration. Give them the proper amounts of food and water, walk them, play with them, and so on. Pet sitting can be enjoyable to you and the animal(s)!

As your dog is probably referred to as a family member, everything possible to maintain his good health is of the essence. For instance, the benefits and the impact of exercise on your dog’s health are many, for both him and other family members.

One has to see exactly how a particular living thing acts in a natural setting. For example, in the world botany, there is a lot of fussiness if one wants to plant to survive. So, a wild flower pulled from the forest and planted then in a garden, there are certain requirements that must be met. It must get the same amount of sunlight, shade, water, and fertilization.

With people and animals, the same is true. Even people were meant to get their exercise through manual labor. This manual labor brought them food. Nowadays, we work in other settings to earn that money and so we have to find ways to be physically active. With regards to domesticated pets, they are actually living in unnatural environments. Again, they must be given the opportunity to become more physically active as they would if they were roaming free.

So, it is of the essence to give them as much of their natural environment even within the home. By doing so, it will keep their weight in check. That will also result in strong muscles enabling them to support their bodies.

Furthermore, these benefits will greatly reduce the risk of developing diabetes, for starters. Diabetes is a chronic life-threatening condition that leads to heart disease and other serious conditions. With a good exercise routine, joint pain and arthritis may also be reduced greatly.

Having said that, it’s important to schedule of regular exercise routine and stick to it. By the same token, there will be benefits in the sense that the dog will be much better behaved. That’s because a lot of the excess energy will be burned off.

A clicker is usually a smaller handheld noisemaker that makes a distinct “click” when it is actually pressed. Clicker instruction is usually a subset or restricted application of OPERANT CONDITIONING.

REFERENCE For Article Click Here Dog Training Tips, Affordable Dog Boarder

Clicker instruction is simply a tool that’s made use of in operant conditioning. A clicker has also been called a bridge or perhaps a marker. Clicker instruction continues to be successfully made use of in animal instruction more than the last couple of decades. Over 140 distinct species have already been successfully “clicker trained”. Countless of the animals you’ve got observed in movies/theatrical appearances or commercials have already been clicker trained.

To put it really essentially, whenever an animal performs a desired action, the handler need to instantly click having a hand held clicker, then deliver a reward the animal desires (like a tasty treat). The animal will associate the click as a marker that clues the animal when it does a precise action, they will get a reward.
What is Operant Conditioning (O C) ?

OC states that considerably of behavior is beneath control of it is consequences. (OC forms an association between executing a specific behavior and a consequence). There are actually four possible consequences to any behavior. They’re:

   1. Some thing Very good can commence or be presented (constructive reinforcement)
2. Some thing Very good can finish or be taken away (unfavorable punishment)
3. Some thing Negative can commence or be presented (constructive punishment) four. Some thing Negative can finish or be taken away (unfavorable reinforcement)

Consequences have to be instant or clearly linked for the behavior. With verbal humans, we are able to explain the connection between the consequence along with the behavior, even when they are separated by a long length of time. For example, you might tell a buddy that you will buy dinner for them seeing that they helped you work on your vehicle last week or perhaps a parent may well explain that the child cannot go to the films as a result of his poor grades. With really young kids, other humans who really don’t have verbal skills, and animals, you cannot explain the connection between the consequence along with the behavior. For the animal, the consequence has to become instant. The solution to work about this have to have for immediacy would be to use a bridge (a clicker) to “mark” a behavior and then deliver the consequence.
What is constructive reinforcement?

Optimistic reinforcement could be the use of rewards (what ever an animal desires, like food or perhaps a favorite toy) to obtain an animal to continually perform a desired behavior, like sitting, laying down or shaking a paw. Rewards must
be relevant (valuable) for the certain animal. Some dogs may perhaps enjoy a specific brand of treat whilst other people may perhaps turn their noses up at it.
What is unfavorable reinforcement?

Damaging reinforcement is while you take away some thing poor to obtain a desired behavior to boost. If you get into a vehicle, along with the seatbelt warning alarm makes a continued high pitch ring until you fasten your seat belt, the vehicle
producers are making use of unfavorable reinforcement. The alarm stops the moment you fasten your seat belt, which will boost the likely hood of you fastening the seatbelt in the long term. Damaging reinforcement can result in fear responses in an animal and can in fact “shut” the animal down. It’s not an appropriate tool to use in instruction anything new to your animal.
What is constructive punishment?

Optimistic punishment could be the use of verbal scolding or physical ‘punishment’ to obtain an animal to stop executing an undesirable behavior. Optimistic punishment can result in aggression, as it promotes a fear-based response in an animal. Animals discover faster by getting rewarded for a specific action instead of getting punished.
What is unfavorable punishment?

Damaging Punishment is taking away an anticipated reward. An example will be selecting up the dog’s leash to go for a walk but placing it down the second the dog jumps or barks at you. Damaging punishment is often made use of to teach self
control in animals as it commonly only final results in some frustration at first until the animal understands he can make the “good” issue come back by acting
appropriately.
My dog is afraid of the clicker

For those who notice the animal is shying away from the click (the sound is unfamiliar and may perhaps frighten a stressed out dog), you’ll be able to either muffle the sound so that it is not as loud, or discontinue the clicker session (if the animal appears to become really stressed, tail tucked, fearful physique language, avoiding). Some techniques of muffling the ‘click’ are as follows:

    * Hide the clicker behind your back
* Place the clicker inside your pocket. Click from within your pocket.
* Wrap the clicker inside a smaller towel

Do I have to click and treat every time?

Yes!!! You might be conditioning your dog to respond for the clicker and then you might be making use of the clicker to mark behaviors. Don’t forget to click and instantly reward following every successful behavior that you simply are wanting to teach. Usually do not click and then fudge on the reward. You should deliver a reward for the animal every time you click. Usually do not click a number of times inside a row and then offer 1 single reward. The ratio is 1 click = 1 reward. Do
NOT point the clicker at your dog like a remote control. Hold your hand casually at your side and click when your dog does some thing you want to reinforce (really don’t forget to instantly reward the dog too!)
Why Cannot I use my voice instead of the clicker?

The “click” from a clicker is usually a really distinguishable sound. The click is non-emotional, has the same pitch and tone and is distinct than other sounds
in the environment. Voices vary widely from person to person. The click will remain the same no matter who utilizes the clicker.

The vast majority of dog owners will already be well aware of the problems of worms in dogs. People who deal with dogs (traders, vets, owners) are usually keen to stress how important it is you do what you can to prevent them.

It is not uncommon to hear worms in dogs described as a gruesome subject. This is even more the case with people who are already a bit squeamish. Regardless of whether you find worms in dogs disgusting or not, it is still your responsibility to ensure you are doing everything you can to prevent them occurring in your pet.

A State of Mind

The prevention of worms in dogs can be aided by putting yourself in the right state of mind. If you view worms in dogs as an annoyance or a chore, then you weaken yourself in the battle against them. The battle against worms in dogs should be part of your daily routine as a mutt owner.

A positive state of mind is imperative. It is inevitable that you will face some setbacks. It may be the case that they have a mild infection. Don’t worry, this is normal.

What You Can Do

By getting yourself in the right state of mind, you can begin your rigorous programme of prevention. A vet should deworm your dog annually. This is imperative, regardless of whether they show any symptoms.

You should make this an even more important consideration when the dog is a puppy. Weaker immune systems make puppies more susceptible to worm infections. They are not yet at full strength. A serious worm infection in a puppy can be fatal.

Do some research on worms in dogs. This way you will know what to look out for and you will be able to recognise if your dog has a problem. Remember, prevention is easier than finding a cure.
