Yorkshire terriers are famous for their soft, flowing coats. But, it takes a great deal of care to keep the hair in tip-top condition. Fortunately, it is easy to learn how to care for your Yorkshire terrier’s coat.

The Yorky is acknowledged for its long & flowing coat, to maintain this appearance the coat requires daily grooming. Yorkshire terriers possess what is acknowledged as a ’single coat,’ simply meaning that they do not have an undercoat.

Most cleaning agent made for persons can actually irritate the epidermis of Yorkshire Terriers. Yorkshire terrier epidermis has a lower tolerance to clean-up solutions than human epidermis does. One of the causes of irritation is that Yorkshire terrier epidermis has different PH needs; so using a human’s cleaning agent can dry your pups epidermis out causing annoyance to you and him.

Start out by teasing out any obvious knots with your fingers.

When washing your Yorkie’s coat, don’t scrub it excessively. The clean up action of the hair soap will lift the dirt without scrubbing, and you take the chance of tangling the coat. It is smart to use a tearless hair soap nearby the eyes and face.

anon you have finished with the shampoo and conditioner the next step is to rinse him off. All the leftover shampoo and conditioner can irritate the skin. If you find that he is scratching excessively anon the washing it is probably due to the residue of the clean up solutions used. So it is essential remove all the shampoo and conditioner from the dog as you can.

One of the best things about giving your Yorkie a bath can be drying him off. Because his tresses can easily be tangled into an aggravated mess at this point, you may try bundling him up with a soft absorbent towel and doing some one on one cuddle time. Taking advantage of his awesome snuggly goodness can be rewarding to both of you.

When your Yorkie is no longer dripping, it is time to develop his coat into tip-top shape.

Before you comb your Yorky lightly mist their coat with a solution of warm water & a conventional mild Yorkie conditioner this will assist to soften the coat. If you groom the coat completely dry it can make it harder to work through any kinks & there is more chance that you will break the hair.

Keep away from the pin brushes that have the little balls on the ends of the pins as they have a tendency to pull at the coat & break the fine hair.

Using a long tined metal comb, go over the now sterilize and silky smooth Yorkshire terrier coat. The idea is to remove the snags and kinks still existing even succeedent a appropriate brushing.

To complete your Yorkie’s look, it is essential to do a few touch-ups.

Some owners prefer to keep their Yorkshire terriers clipped short for ease, this is a first-rate idea but you must ensure that you are prepared to keep this up every few months.

It is equally essential to care for your Yorkie’s feet. The tresses between the pads should be trimmed so that it is level with the pads. at the same time as you can shape the tresses encircling the feet at this time, it is easier to wait until succeedent you finish his bath.

Some pooches get what has been established as “dingle berries”. This is excrement handing from the canine’s body hair locality of his anus. Sometimes the excrement can actually cover the anus so extensively the dog cannot relieve himself. Thus trimming the body hair locality of the anus opening can and will effectively prevent the condition established as “dingle berries”.

Often Yorkies will develop excess tresses inside their ears. This needs to be plucked, or your Yorkie will have an increased take a chance of infection.

With ear clean up solution, use some small gauze squares to freshen his ears. Never put anything small like Q-tips into his ears, it is easy to accidentally damage his eardrums.

Finally, you can decorate your little guy with a fancy ribbon or bow. Of course, many Yorkshire terrier owners prefer their pups to go au-natural instead.

You should also give his nails a quick trim.

Brush his teeth subsequent each bath, and have them checked annually by your vet.

The two main reasons for regular grooming are: If your Yorkshire terrier looks great he/she will feel great. As you are grooming you can check for any sores, lumps or cuts on your dog.

A well cleaned Yorkie is a fit Yorkshire terrier. By grooming your Yorkshire terrier every day, you will keep on top of his health and keep him glad as well.

Yorkshire terriers are famous for their soft, flowing coats. But, it takes a great deal of care to keep the coat in tip-top condition. Fortunately, it is easy to learn how to care for your Yorkie’s coat.

Yorkshire terriers do not have the regular ‘fur’ of other pets therefore they are less prone to possess the regular ‘doggy’ smells another bonus is that the breed does not shed its hair as most other pets do.

Most shampoo made for persons can actually irritate the the tissue forming the external covering of the body of Yorkshire Terriers. Yorkshire terrier the tissue forming the external covering of the body has a lower tolerance to cleaning up solutions than human the tissue forming the external covering of the body does. One of the causes of irritation is that Yorkshire terrier the tissue forming the external covering of the body has different PH needs; so using a human’s shampoo can dry your full-breeds the tissue forming the external covering of the body out causing annoyance to you and him.

Before starting, make sure that you have everything you will need close at hand. There’s nothing more frustrating than discovering that you are missing something as holding a soggy pooch in the middle of a bath.

Don’t scrub your Yorky’s coat excessively. When washing your sweet pet the clean up solution of the hair soap will lift the dirt by itself. No extreme scrubbing required. Rubbing lightly with your hand lessens the take a chance of tangling the coat. Using tearless puppy or pooch hair soap can greatly enhance the experience for you and your Yorkie. You need only use puppy tearless hair soap around the eyes.

anon you have finished with the shampoo and conditioner the next step is to rinse him off. All the leftover shampoo and conditioner can irritate the skin. If you find that he is scratching excessively anon the washing it is probably due to the residue of the cleaning up solutions used. So it is needful remove all the shampoo and conditioner from the canine as you can.

Possibly the nicest part of getting a bath is getting dry. Because you don’t want to mess his fuzz by scrubbing him dry, it is best to wrap you little guy up in a towel and cuddle him for a while. Take advantage of this snuggle time to love your boy up, and enjoy his company.

anon you have finished drying the Yorkshire terrier pup off and have rewarded him for being a good puppy. It becomes time to move onto the next steps of combing and trimming that lovely Yorkie sleek coat.

Never clean and brush a dry coat, instead spray it down with a light conditioner, or water.

Keep away from the pin brushes that have the little balls on the ends of the pins as they have a tendency to pull at the fur & break the fine hair.

Using a long tined metal comb, go over the now pure and shiny smooth Yorky coat. The idea is to remove the snags and messes still existing even post a fitting brushing.

The next step is to assess or reassess your fuzz style strategy for your pet. Consider length, age of your dog, and specific needs it may have developed recently due to environment, age, and medical issues before trimming any hair.

Some owners prefer to keep their Yorkies clipped short for ease, this is a fantastic scheme but you must ensure that you are prepared to keep this up every few months.

The paws should be trimmed so that the fuzz spreads in a nice round shape.

Some full-breeds get what has been acknowledged as “dingle berries”. This is excrement handing from the Yorky’s mane vicinity of his anus. Sometimes the excrement can actually cover the anus so extensively the canine cannot relieve himself. Thus trimming the mane vicinity of the anus opening can and will effectively prevent the condition acknowledged as “dingle berries”.

Often Yorkies will get excess mane inside their ears. This needs to be plucked, or your canine will have an increased run the risk of of infection.

Never attempt to stick anything into your Yorky’s ears, simply absolutely wipe around the outer ear & very gently around the inner ear. Look at your Yorky’s ears regularly & become accustomed to their regular appearance, this way you will be instantly aware if anything alters.

Many people use a bow to tie up the fuzz between the pooch’s ears. A lot of people mistake the band or bow placed so perfectly in the pooch’s mane as entirely a decorative piece, in truth without it the pooch’s fuzz would be constantly in its eyes.

You should also give his nails a quick trim.

It is necessary to purify your Yorkshire terrier’s teeth regularly with a special canine toothbrush & paste, encouraging your canine to chew on hide based treats is also a good scheme as this will help to reduce tartar building up.

It is needful to groom your Yorkshire terrier on a daily basis.

Help to keep your Yorky delighted & well by grooming him/her regularly, since all if your pooch is delighted you are happy!

In 2006, the American Kennel Club announced that the Yorkshire Terrier was the second most popular purebred dog in America. They are poised to become the nation’s most popular dog – even over the ubiquitous Labrador Retriever. Where did the Yorkshire Terrier come from? What breeds went into making it? And why did it get to be so popular?

Despite being named after a Northern county in England, the direct ancestor stock of today’s Yorkshire Terrier came from Scotland. When Scottish weavers lost work because of the rise of factory made clothing, they had to move south and brought their dogs with them. These dogs were Scottish Terriers, Paisley Terriers, Clydesdale (or Clyde) Terriers, the latter two breeds are now extinct. The Scottish dogs bred with the local terrier breeds, thought to have been Skye Terriers, Maltese and the now extinct breeds of Black and Tan English and Waterside. The eventual result was Huddersfield Ben, considered the fore sire of the entire Yorkshire Terrier breed.

Back in 1865 – the year of Huddersfield Ben’s birth – dogs were bred to exhibit useful qualities, not for their looks. There also was not much interest in keeping breeds pure. There are very few accurate records of dog breeding at this time. It is also thought that dog breeding was considered such a secret business that no records were kept for fear of the knowledge getting out to competitors. Yorkshire Terriers got their name because the breed was perfected in Yorkshire.

The Scottish dogs then inevitably wooed the blushing English roses of the local canine population. It is thought those breeds were the Black and Tan English Terrier (also now extinct), the Skye Terrier and the Waterside Terrier (which is – you guessed it – also extinct). According to the majority of Yorkshire Terrier information sources, the founding father of the breed, Huddersfield Ben, was born in Yorkshire in 1865. He became one of the most admired dogs of his day.

The Yorkshire Terrier was bred back then for a specific purpose and not for looks. Rats were a terrible problem in farms, homes and the Yorkshire mines. Small, brave terriers were found to be better than cats for quickly dispatching these rats.

Over the last century, Yorkshire Terriers have become ever smaller. The original Yorkies were about thirty pounds and came in several colors. Today’s show Yorkies are not to exceed seven pounds and must be steel blue and tan (and have those colors in specific proportions).

Just one hundred years after Huddersfield Ben’s birth, the breed standard listed the weight of a Yorkie to be “no more than seven pounds”. The current trend is to breed them even smaller. Who knows how small the Yorkshire Terrier will be by 2065?

After deciding that your new pet is going to be a Yorkshire Terrier the next thing you want to do is find a Yorkshire Terrier breeder that you can talk to about your potential purchase. There are a lot of sources you can use for finding Yorkshire Terrier breeders to talk to and in some cases it takes a little more effort than just opening up a phone book.

There is no better source for quality pet advice than your vet and this is the best place to start for advice on a good Yorkshire Terrier breeder. Your vet wants you to have a happy and healthy pet just like you want so they will offer the best advice they have. If you do not have a vet then this is the perfect time to start talking to one so go ahead and start talking to vets and when you find one you like start getting their advice on good breeders.
Another great place to find Yorkshire Terrier breeders to talk to is by looking up breeders listed with the various breeder registries throughout the country. Usually you can find these registries by looking them up on the Internet and once you find them just narrow your search to breeders that are listed in your area to talk to. The breeders listed with a registry are part of an accepted standard so that already gets you off to a good start.

The Internet is probably the greatest communication tool ever invented and that includes local information as well as national and international. Some local Yorkshire Terrier breeders will host websites and offer you their contact information on their site. This is not very common but it is becoming more and more common so take a look on the Internet and see what they have to offer you in the way of local Yorkshire Terrier breeders to talk to about the possibility of getting your new pet from them.
While you are searching for Yorkshire Terrier breeders you can also do a search for other Yorkshire Terrier owners and if you see a dog you seem to like you may want to contact the owners through their site and see if they will recommend a good breeder to you. Sometimes they will not because their breeder may be very selective, but sometimes you can get a good recommendation this way so it is at least worth a try.

Sometimes finding Yorkshire Terrier breeders to talk to is almost a science in itself but the best ones can sometimes be difficult to find so it can become a process. But in the end you want to talk to as many breeders as possible and the only way to do that is to find lots of breeders to talk to! Good luck to you and remember that this is your future family pet you are dealing with here so take your time.

You can find good advice on finding Yorkshire Terrier breeders in this article. This article and others like it are full of good Yorkshire Terrier information.

Training your Yorkshire terrier is important. Before you start to train your Yorkshire terrier there are many basic things that you should be aware of for your training to be effective. One of the very basic concepts in training a dog is consistency. Unlike us humans, dogs have simple brains. If you are training your Yorkie and applying consistency, do not let your children or anyone else interrupt you with your dog during the time that your Yorkshire terrier is being trained. The reality is that many dog owners are not willing to train their dogs to obey commands. Learning how to train your Yorkie is a combination of compassion and a little bit of manipulation. You can give your pet a treat for obeying a command. Basic dog training for Yorkies is basically teaching your pet to follow instructions based on reward and encouragement. Keep in mind that basic dog obedience training doesn’t just involve training the dog; it is in a way also training you, the dog owner. If your dog does not get properly trained, it was not your dog who failed, it was you. Learn how you can get away from those high priced dog training classes and schools and train your dog yourself.

In 2006, Yorkshire Terriers became the second most popular purebred dog in America. The year before, they had been number three. Although it seems hard to think that any breed of dog would topple the long reigning Labrador Retriever from the top spot, the tiny Yorkshire Terrier seems poised to do just that. Wondering if you have ever seen a Yorkshire Terrier (most commonly called Yorkies)? Chances are, you have seen a lot of them.

Yorkshire Terriers weigh only about six pounds, although they can get heavier or lighter without being ill in any way. They have pointed ears, a tiny pointed nose and a yappy voice. They are most commonly in blue and gold coats, although a there are slight variations in color the blue and gold dominate. These coats naturally grow long and silky, getting to be almost twice the length of the dog, requiring that tiny red bow in top so the dog can see.
The personality of a Yorkshire Terrier is pretty consistent, even though you will find some differences in individual dogs. There is a temperament goal in the Yorkshire breed standard that ethical breeders try to get their dogs to copy. Yorkshire Terriers are the benevolent Napoleons of the canine world, needing to be in charge of every little thing in their territory. They are bossy, vocal and need to be fussed over.

The breed standard lists Yorkies as alert, vivacious and full of “self importance”. (That’s putting it mildly). Yorkies are one of the few dog breeds that can be picky eaters. They make very good watchdogs. They do not do well in a home with pet rodents, as they were bred to kill rats. However, they do well in homes with elderly or small children. In a home with other dogs, don’t be surprised if the Yorkie becomes the alpha dog very quickly.
Yorkshire Terriers pointed ears are more V-shaped than a tight point. Their noses are supposed to be always black. Their eyes are bright and alert. The Yorkshire Terrier should seem as if he thinks he’s better than everyone else and carry himself like he’s the biggest dog in the world. Their backs are level and they should stand squarely. They shouldn’t have an overbite or an undershot jaw like a bulldog.

Some common faults in a purebred Yorkshire Terrier include floppy ears as an adult, being just too big to be in the show ring, having an undocked tail (all show dogs have tails docked at two or three days of age) or dewclaws (which are removed from all show dogs). Another fault is if they are over seven pounds, which happens often, even in purebreds, since the Yorkshire Terrier ancestor was well over seven pounds. Another fault is if they don’t have the right color.

You can find many books on dog care, including care of the Yorkshire Terrier. Go to the library to find books that contain extensive Yorkshire Terrier information.

It’s true that Yorkies may make smaller messes but the size of the mess doesn’t really affect the amount you are going to spend on cleaning up after your pup. Yorkies need to be trained in the same ways that a large dog would. Nobody said that Yorkshire Terrier training was going to be easy!

You have to remember that their size might work against them in that their tiny bladders won’t hold as much (or for as long) if you’re late coming home for their potty break.

Yorkshire Terriers don’t mind living in apartments or homes without big yards. They only need a little spot to do their business, so a flowerbed might be enough room.

Some people make fun of little dogs in their knit sweaters, but it’s more than just a fashion statement. During the winter months in cold climates, the change from heated indoors to freezing outdoors is very harsh on a Yorkshire Terrier’s body.

The extreme temperature change can also interfere with the dog being able to do his business outside. The cold will usually send the puppy running back inside. The warmth of the indoors will trigger your dog’s urges to go and you will most likely be spending some time cleaning up the accident. Sweaters help to avoid this problem.

Some Yorkshire Terriers will not budge off their hind legs until they see the sweater in your hands. Your Yorkshire Terrier may totally refuse to go outdoors in rain or cold, even with a sweater on.

You have to plan options. Perhaps you can keep a papered box in the garage as a backup potty during bad weather. Only use this for limited times during the year so that you don’t discourage the dog from going outside to his regular potty spots.

If your dog usually goes outdoors or you walk him through parks frequently, always keep an eye on him. Look out for tall grass and bushes. You dog may want to sniff a certain spot and could potentially end up being bit by a snake.

Yorkie owners need to remember to be courteous to their neighbors. Just because your dog’s feces is small does not mean your neighbor will not mind if it is laying in their yard. Clean up after your dog!

This is especially good measure since dog poop can be easily stepped on and dragged into the home. Most of the time you won’t notice until it’s too late and your carpet is dirtied up. Your neighbors will not appreciate this so be responsible and clean up messes promptly.

It’s no surprise that housetraining Yorkshire Terrier works just the same for large dogs as it does for small ones like Yorkies. You can start with crate training and work to establish a routine for potty breaks. Many little dogs are spoiled because they constantly sit in their owner’s lap. This is where your positive reinforcement, praise and affection can come in handy.

A terrific resource on this are the free videos on housetraining Yorkshire Terrier from the Yorkshire Terrier trainers of Ultimate-Yorkie.com.

Yorkshire Terriers are known as Yorkies. These dogs are marked with their friendliness, cheerfulness and elegance. Belonging to the small dog breeds, Yorkshire Terriers are one of the popular and attractive toy dogs. If you live in a small home and prefer a soft, little, cute and sweet-natured dog, quite naturally the Yorkshire Terrier is a perfect choice for you. Although these dogs have a true fascination for long walks, they do not usually miss out the chances to run around the garden or home if they are allowed so. They possess a jovial mind, so it is better to arrange various toys for them to play.

Probably there is no one on the face of earth who does not get hypnotized while looking at a Yorkie’s charismatic appearance blended with intelligent attitude. They can weigh less than six pounds typically, however they will never back down if they perceive anything threatening in the environment. Sensitiveness, loyalty and showing affection to the family members are its integral characteristics. They are true descendants of Terrier, so are their temperaments.
Although Yorkshire Terriers are very small in size, these little dogs do not really bother about their size especially when time comes to defense. They put forth their best effort to defend their area. They possess a sharp sense of hearing, which causes them to alert their owners if they perceive the slightest possibility of intrusion. This quality in Yorkshire Terriers makes them really noisy from time to time, so before buying one, give enough consideration to your neighbors’ perspective.

Although Yorkshire Terriers are a popular show breed, preparing them exclusively for that purpose is truly a time-consuming and specialized job. It is mainly because of the fact that the Yorkie coat grooming for show purpose is really a difficult task. In order to maintain the coat for any show or for any special purpose, it is better to get in touch with a specialized breed club or professional breeders. Since thorough care is intended for this breed, Yorkshire Terriers are not for everyone.
Yorkshire Terriers are a very social type of dogs. They possess the ability to mix up with other household animals like cats and dogs quite comfortably, especially when they are brought up with them. However, enough measure needs to be taken if you are exposing the dog with a new household animal for the first time, since this dog carries a strong instinct for possessiveness for its owner, which it typically inherits from its ancestors.

Since the dog is very small in size, you should take good care with your Yorkshire Terrier especially if you have small children at home. It is because mistreatment may lead to injury to them. Typically, Yorkshire Terriers love to play with gentle little children. They love to take a nap on their owner’s lap. House training is not a difficult task for Yorkshire Terriers and crate training is mandatory for them to ensure safety. Typically these dogs have good health without any apparent health complications and their life span is long.

The Yorkshire Terrier is a great family dog, marked by its elegant appearance and intelligent behavior. If you are seeking Yorkshire Terrier information this article will offer it for you.

Yorkies are making their way into the homes and hearts of more and more people every year as many people are beginning to see what this entire breed has to offer. This animal is extremely fun loving and gets along well with other animals or pets that may be currently in the home or that you would bring home later. Beware that this fearless little, yet very sturdy dog, is able to win your heart no matter what.

Although this breed only grows to be about five or six pounds at full grown, they make up in personality what they do not have in size. And they certainly do love getting their attention from anyone willing to give it to them. Loving the pampered life, this dog makes an excellent addition into almost any home, or even purse for that matter as they are so small you can take them everywhere with you.
Yorkies love to play and run around and with all kinds of play comes all kinds of cleaning in order to continue looking their best. The Yorkshire Terrier does require daily brushing in order to keep their coat in tiptop shape. Their long silky coat can quickly get out of hand if it is not properly taken care of. Also, they love their teeth being brushed, as this is even more attention focused on them.

Even though most people would not expect it, these little pups make excellent guard dogs, as they will be the first to announce a stranger at the door. Yorkies love their family and treasure their home so it is no wonder that so many people decide to make them apart of their home and lives. With their outgoing nature, you will never regret bringing this puppy into your life, your home, and into your heart.
Although Yorkies are generally extremely friendly and outgoing, it is important to watch small children around this breed, as they are not always suitable for homes that have small children in them. Yorkies are very small in size and they know it so the fast movements of the small children make them nervous. So therefore, they end up snapping at children, which can cause physical and emotional trauma, which a child could carry with them for a long time.

Yorkies are also sometimes hard to house train as that independent personality tends to come out. They seem to have a mind of their own at times and this can get in the way of a quick training, but that is not to say that they are not trainable at all. It just takes the Yorkies a little more time to get the hang of things. Yorkies also do not prefer to be in the rain or out in the cold so if heading outdoors, you may just want to grab their favorite sweater for comfort.

When thinking about Yorkies and whether you should bring one home, make sure you understand the typical personality of the Yorkshire Terrier. To make sure that your lifestyle matches the personality of the Yorkies you should read as much Yorkshire Terrier information as possible.
